1893-CC $20 NGC MS 61

The Last Year of Issue for Carson City Double Eagles

All Carson City Double Eagles are scarce in Mint Quality, and the 1893 is no exception – with collector demand increasing every year, Mint State examples of all dates are becoming less available.

On offer today is a lustrous MS 61 example, frosty with reddish highlights – it is a specimen worthy of serious consideration.

1857 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Only 7 Graded Higher

The 1857 Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 439,375 pieces and the issue is not difficult to locate in circulated grades up to the XF-AU level. This issue was not nearly as well-represented in recent shipwreck finds as its San Francisco counterpart, with only two examples recovered from the S.S. Central America and 26 found in the wreck of the S.S. Republic. As a result, the 1857 is rare in MS62 condition, and a prime condition rarity in higher grades. The one offered here displays a crusty area at approximately 1:00-2:00 at the obverse rim. We prefer to leave it as is, for its originality. The PCGS population is just 28 with 7 higher.

1855 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS60

Rare Mint State

The year 1855 saw heavy double eagle production on both coasts, with 364,666 pieces struck at Philadelphia and nearly 880,000 coins minted at San Francisco. Do not be misled by those figures! The Philadelphia coins are much scarcer than their S-mint counterparts across all grade levels, and Mint State representatives are quite rare. In fact, PCGS and NGC combined have graded fewer than 50 pieces in all uncirculated grades.

1907-D Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS66

Gemmy Last Year of Issue

Although authorized as a U.S. branch mint in the 1860s, the Denver Mint operated as an assay office for its first four decades until coins were finally minted there in 1906. Liberty double eagles were only produced at the Colorado facility in 1906 and 1907, with a total production for both years of less than 1.5 million pieces. These coins are quite elusive in top grades. The one offered here features satiny looking luster and a lovely overall appearance. The PCGS population is just 24 with 3 higher, two of the latter being MS66+ examples. Listed at $18,200 in the CDN CPG and $18,000 in the PCGS price guide.

A Grading Rarity – Only 14 graded higher by PCGS and NGC Combined!

High grade and flashy, with no distracting marks – a finer specimen would be hard to locate. Sports a gorgeous medium gold color and a superb strike. 1911 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65+

Satiny Sashaying Saint

The 1911 claims one of the few mintages of less than 200,000 coins, but the story of its availability is similar to that of other issues in the series. Most examples were exported to European markets, either directly from New York to London or through Ottawa, Canada. Those pieces that avoided melting overseas were subjected to rough handling, explaining why nearly all 1911 double eagles are found in MS64 or lower condition. Gems such as this, are scarce. The PCGS population is only 14 with 19 higher. Listed at $21,500 in the PCGS price guide.

Three 1907 High Reliefs PCGS MS61, 62 and 63

One-zee, Two-zee, Three-zee

The 1907 High Relief Double Eagle is one of the most popular coins ever struck by the United States Mint. The coins are sculptural in appearance and are considered by many to be the most beautiful regular issue gold coin ever produced.

Wire Edge PCGS MS61 (PCGS price guide $17,500) Offered at $14,850
Flat Edge PCGS MS62 (PCGS price guide $19,000) Offered at $16,975
Wire Edge PCGS MS63 (PCGS price guide $23,500) Offered at $20,950

Unfortunately, the design was also impractical and redesigned by Charles Barber later in the year. The date is given in Roman numerals (the coins nickname by some) and lacks the Motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. President Roosevelt believed that money could easily be used for ungodly pursuits such as gambling and thus the name of the Lord should not be used on coinage.

The 1907 High Relief is categorized by most as either Wire Rim or Flat Rim. The coins are identical except for raised metal around the rims. This is probably the result of some tinkering by the Mint while they struggled to produce coins with such extreme relief.

Around the late 1960s or early 1970s experts began to describe certain 1907 High Relief Double Eagles as Proof. These coins are certainly different, but not exactly like the latter Proof Double Eagles of the series. There are no mintage figures and the origins of the coins are a mystery. The coins have deep swirling die lines and exhibit a satiny surface similar to the Roman finish Proof gold coins. A fairly large number exist and it is my opinion that they are the result of experimentation with the new design by Mint employees.

Many, if not the great majority of the original mintage was saved when the 1907 High Reliefs were issued. Thousands still exist and most seen are in some form of Mint State. Gem examples can easily be purchased if budget permits. A few nearly flawless examples are known. The finest High Relief graded by NGC is a PR 69 that sold for $534,000 in 2005.

1879-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS62

Rare Unc. S-Mint $20 Lib

For all practical purposes, MS62 is the optimal collectible grade for this San Francisco date. While all Mint State coins are scarce, the value increases dramatically above the MS62 level. By way of example, to our knowledge, the last MS63 – a PCGS example – to have been auctioned brought $29,375 more than three years ago. None have been graded higher by NGC. Listed at $15,600 in the CDN CPG, $14,600 in the NGC price guide and $16,500 in Trends.

1860-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS61

Rare Mint State

The 1860-S Type One Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 544,950 pieces, a substantial production total in absolute terms, but slightly smaller than average for a San Francisco issue from this period. The coins were released into the channels of commerce, where they circulated heavily for many years, suffering the usual wear and attrition along the way. Few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary numismatists and the issue is rare in Mint State grades today. The current PCGS population is 16 with 12 higher. This particular example is a bit lighter and brighter than seen on our images. Listed at $16,300 in the CDN CPG and $12,000 in the PCGS price guide.
