Gold and Silver unlikely to outperform in the coming months – HSBC

Strategists at HSBC remain neutral on Gold and Silver as they see muted momentum.

Higher rates and real bond yields create a competitive disadvantage for Gold

“Despite the recent bounce in commodity prices, we do not expect Gold and Silver to outperform in the coming months.”

“USD’s recent strength has weighed on metals, while higher rates and real bond yields create a competitive disadvantage for Gold compared to cash and bonds.”

Sparkling 1852-O Liberty Double Eagle NGC AU58

The 1852-O Liberty double eagle claims a substantial mintage of 190,000 pieces, but the issue circulated heavily in the regional economy at the time of issue and few examples were saved by contemporary collectors. As a result, the 1852-O is readily available in lower circulated grades, but it becomes very scarce at the AU58 level, and Mint State coins are rare. The PCGS population is 97 with 28 graded higher. This offering exhibits strong luster, that sparkles under light and contributes to this coin’s excellent eye-appeal.

Listed at $15,800 in the CDN CPG and $16,000 the NGC price guide.

Offered at $14,300 delivered.

1855-C Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS MS62

You Should “C” This

A paltry mintage of 3,677 quarter eagles was accomplished by the Charlotte Mint in 1855. That production total is the smallest from the North Carolina facility for any individual date in the series (the 1843-C Small Date coins represent only part of the mintage for 1843). Perhaps no more than 100 1855-C quarter eagles are extant in all grades, though inflated population figures might lead one to believe otherwise.   Mint State specimens are very rare and this is one of just five at this grade level with but three higher. When tilted just slightly, this coin displays lighter color and considerably more luster than indicated in our pictures.

(1831-1834) Bechtler $2.50

K-8 Beaded, with 75G PCGS MS62

Throughout the entire Bechtler coinage era, lasting from 1831 until about 1850, the family coined nine varieties of $2.50 gold pieces. This coin represents the K-8 variety, with RUTHERFORD in a small circle in the center of the obverse and the weight 75 G. below the 20 C. Based on current rarity ratings published in the March 2017 Kagin’s catalog featuring the Dr. Chris Allan Collection, no more than 200 examples survive from all nine mulings. The average grade of all PCGS certified Bechtler quarter eagles is AU53. The present example is far finer than the typical survivor and is the second best of the Kagin-8 die pairing that PCGS has examined. The finest known example realized $123,375 in the March 2017 offering of the Allan Collection. Thus, this coin has a PCGS population of only 1 with 1 graded higher. Lighter in color and far more lustrous in hand than seen in our images.

1878 Three Dollar Gold Piece NGC MS67

None Higher at NGC

Within the three-dollar gold series, the 1878 is the most popular type coin candidate. Its mintage of 82,304 pieces is among the highest in the series, contributing to the issue’s availability. However, it is also one of the most attractive issues in the series as a rule. A high-grade 1878 three-dollar piece can be one of the most attractive U.S. gold coins known. Luster frequently shimmers like it does on no other issue, and ranges of color can be found. This one is gorgeous in both regards. The NGC population is 11 with none higher.

1862 Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC MS64

Rare, Choice Unc. Civil War Issue

Although the 1862 quarter eagle has a mintage that tops 98,000 coins — one of the higher production totals of the period — Mint State examples are still rare in all grades. Most such pieces are heavily bag-marked, and relatively few grade higher than MS62. The finest graded are one PCGS 64+ and one NGC MS64+. The NGC population is just 3 with 1 higher. In hand, this example is more lustrous and less reddish-gold in hue than seen in our images.

1840-D Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC AU55

This “D” Gets a Passing Grade

The Liberty Head quarter eagle series commenced in 1840 with a production of 3,532 D-mint coins. The 1840-D is tied with the 1854-D for third-rarest among all Dahlonega quarter eagles, and is the rarest in AU50 and finer. This coin was struck from shattered dies, showing bisecting cracks on each side. As is so often the case, this coin is much more lustrous than seen in our images. The NGC population is 8 with 8 higher.

1854-O Three Dollar Gold Piece NGC MS61

Very Rare Unc. O-mint

While 1854-D is a great rarity, more than a thousand 1854-O examples remain from the mintage of 24,000 pieces, typically in XF to AU grades. Mint State representatives are surprisingly rare, given the tendency of the public to set aside new designs and denominations during the introductory year of issue. In hand, this one is more of a yellow-gold than orange-gold color and much more lustrous than seen in our images. The NGC population is just 10 with 7 higher.

1870-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Few are Finer

The 1870-S Liberty double eagle claims a substantial mintage of 982,000 pieces, but most of the coins were released into circulation, where they were either exported or worn down and melted for recoinage. The average survivor grades no better than VF or XF today, and the issue is a prime condition rarity in grades above MS61. The PCGS popualtion is only 17 with 3 higher.

1868-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Only Two Graded Higher

Although more than 800,000 double eagles were struck at San Francisco in 1868, few pieces survive in Mint State. In fact, examples are scarce in MS60 and MS61, and anything finer is a major rarity. The PCGS population is a mere 8 with 2 higher, each of the latter being MS62+ examples.
