1871-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS63

Positively Pleasing

The San Francisco Mint was the premier agency producing double eagles throughout the Type Two design from 1866 to 1876. In 1871, the California facility struck 928,000 double eagles, and more than 3,000 of those coins have been graded by NGC and PCGS. Of that population, less than one-tenth have earned a Mint State designation, and almost all such coins are heavily abraded; pieces grading finer than MS62 are extremely rare, as evidenced by the NGC population of 7 with 1 higher. In hand, this coin’s color is more yellow-gold, as opposed to the reddish-gold seen in our images.

1866 Motto Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS63

Pop 1, One Graded Higher

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse of the double eagle design in 1866 and the Philadelphia Mint struck 698,775 coins with the new motif. The coins circulated heavily in the 19th century and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. The issue is prized by type collectors today, as the first year of the Type Two design, but examples in MS62 condition are very rare, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable. In hand, the color of this coin tends a bit more towards yellow gold, as opposed to the orange-gold seen in our images. This is the only PCGS MS63, with a single (MS64) example graded higher.

1804 Small 8 Capped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS63

Choice Mint State

 A mintage of 30,475 Capped Bust Right half eagles was accomplished in 1804, with seven die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the scarce BD-1 variety, with a Small 8 (John Dannreuther notes it is really a Normal 8) in the date and a graver’s line from the point of the shield to the eagle’s beak on the reverse. The BD-1 has a surviving population of 70-90 examples in all grades.

1856-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS63

From a mintage of more than 1.1 million pieces, the 1856-S Liberty double eagle has always been available in lower circulated grades, but Mint State specimens were very rare before the issue surfaced in large numbers in modern shipwreck finds. More than 1,000 examples of the 1856-S were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America alone, representing 18 different die varieties. Many of these coins were in Mint State grades, making the 1856-S a popular choice with branch mint type collectors. This beauty exhibits more luster and a lighter, more yellow-gold (as opposed to orange-gold) hue than seen in our pictures.

1806 Pointed 6, 8×5 Stars Draped Bust Half Eagle PCGS MS63

Numismatists have identified six die varieties of 1806 half eagles, five of them show a Pointed 6 in the date and the sixth has a Round Top 6. The 2021 Guide Book lists the mintage for all the Pointed 6 varieties as 9,676 pieces, while the single Round Top 6 variety has a large production total of 54,417 examples. This coin represents the BD-1 Pointed 6 variety, with stars 1 and 2 close to the curl, and imperfect T’s on the reverse. The BD-1 has a surviving population of 100-150 specimens in all grades and probably accounted for 6,000-8,000 pieces of the reported mintage. When tilted slightly, this coin is quite a bit lighter in hue (and less orange) than seen in the images. The PCGS population stands at 14 with 4 higher.

1841-D Half Eagle NGC MS63

Highly Lustrous, Flashy

According to Doug Winter, from an original mintage of 29,392 pieces, the 1841-D Liberty half eagle is estimated to have a surviving population of approximately 150-175 specimens in all grades combined. These numbers are quite small in an absolute sense. However, in circulated grades, at least, this issue is actually one of the more available ones in the series, as the supply of many other dates is even smaller. A scratch in the right obverse field might be all that’s keeping this coin from a higher grade (and considerably higher value). In hand, it’s even more appealing looking than seen in our images. The NGC pop report shows just 3 at this grade, with 3 higher.

1811 Tall 5 Capped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS63

No “Shortie” Here

In Mint State, this, the BD-1, is by far the scarcer of the two 1811 half eagle varieties. In the absolute sense, BD-1 is fairly plentiful for an early half eagle with perhaps 175 to 250 coins known, per John Dannreuther. But the population thins considerably in Mint State. The NGC population is a mere 3 with 5 higher, none finer than MS64. The one we offer here boasts a sharp strike and frosty surfaces.
