1868-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Only Two Graded Higher

Although more than 800,000 double eagles were struck at San Francisco in 1868, few pieces survive in Mint State. In fact, examples are scarce in MS60 and MS61, and anything finer is a major rarity. The PCGS population is a mere 8 with 2 higher, each of the latter being MS62+ examples.

1866-S Motto Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS61

“Motto” for Today is…

This is the first San Francisco Type Two double eagle issue. Although struck in large quantity (842,250 pieces), the mintage circulated heavily in the West and precious few Uncirculated pieces have surfaced in the past 150+ years. Among the small number of Mint State survivors, none have graded MS63 or better at either PCGS or NGC. The PCGS population currently stands at 19 with 8 higher.

Modern Monetary Theory and the crisis of capitalism: Part one

The Deficit Myth by Stephanie Kelton

This is the first part of a two-part article.

Throughout the history of capitalism and its recurrent crises, various theories have been brought forward by “left” theorists who maintain that these crises and the social ills they generate can be ameliorated, if not entirely eliminated, by changing the monetary system without touching the foundations of capitalist production itself.

While presenting themselves as “leftist” and “progressive,” advocating reform of the capitalist system, history shows that in periods of great crisis they seek to divert the working class from the program of socialist revolution while at the same time providing the ideological foundations for political forces that advance a counterrevolutionary solution to the crisis.

Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), the essential principles of which are outlined in this book by one of its foremost advocates, is the latest expression of this phenomenon.

The struggle against such tendencies goes back to the very origins of Marxist political economy.

1929 Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS64

Last Year-Of-Issue Rarity

The Indian Head half eagle series was short-lived. Yet, it comprised a number of highly elusive dates, none more so than the 1929. Although the 1909-O is perhaps more recognizable to the uninitiated thanks to its low mintage of 34,200 coins, the 1929 is rarer in the absolute sense with a survival rate approximately 50% lower than its New Orleans counterpart. The Mint struck 662,000 five-dollar gold pieces that year, but nearly the entire mintage was held in reserve and eventually melted after the Gold Recall of 1933. Coins that avoided the melting pot are apt to be found in AU to Uncirculated condition, generally MS61 to MS63.

1839-C Classic Quarter Eagle NGC AU55

Sharp AU Charlotte $2.50

While the 1839-C is one of the more frequently encountered Charlotte quarter eagles, it is disproportionately popular because it is a part of the Classic series. Only 18,140 pieces were produced, and of that number it is estimated perhaps 300 to 400 examples are known today in all grades.
