1920-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65

Tied for Highest Graded

The 1920-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is among the greatest rarities in the series, particularly in high grade.  In the absolute sense, it’s a trifle more plentiful than the 1927-D, the 1930-1932 melt rarities, and by an even smaller margin, the 1921. However, in Gem condition, the 1920-S excels — at this level, only the 1921 and 1927-D are considered rarer or more significant acquisitions. This, of course, excludes the uncollectible 1933 and the 1907 Ultra High Relief pattern. No meaningful quantities have ever turned up in European hoards, and it is likely that none were ever officially used in the foreign trade. The example offered here is lighter and brighter in hand. The NGC population is a mere 2 with none higher.

1892-O Morgan Dollar NGC MS66

Tied for Highest Graded

The 1892-O Morgan was not well-produced and most examples seen are softly struck, with subdued mint luster. Some were released into circulation near the time of issue, making it readily available in circulated grades. However, most of the mintage was held in government storage and a large portion of the production escaped melting under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Still, at the Gem level, the issue becomes elusive, due mostly to its poor production, and finer examples are decidedly rare. Here for the taking is a pleasing, satiny, color-free representative. The NGC population is just 6 (including 1 star-designated example) with none higher.

1884 Gold Dollar NGC MS68+

An 8 and a Plus

This flashy, highly lustrous and exquisitely preserved example looks as if it were struck very recently, as opposed to more than 130 years ago! According to the NGC population report, it’s one of only nineteen to have received this lofty grade for the entire run of Type Three Gold Dollars (with only five graded higher).

1922-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS66

Only 1 Graded Higher

The San Francisco issue is the scarcest of the three 1922 Peace dollars, especially in Mint State. The fact that its mintage of nearly 17.5 million pieces exceeds that of the 1922-D by more than 1.5 million pieces is a non-factor. Throughout the Peace dollar series there is an unbroken rule that for each year this denomination was coined, the San Francisco issue is rarer in Gem or better grades than either the Philadelphia or Denver counterparts. Mintage totals play no part in this. Many researchers suggest the lower survival rate of S-mint dollars in high grade is due to more active circulation on the West Coast, and in some cases bags of Uncirculated coins still in government vaults were just moved more frequently, reducing the grades of the coins contained. This Gem is noticeably brighter when viewed up close and personal. The PCGS population is just 20 with a single (MS66+) example graded higher.

1804 Small 8 Capped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS63

Choice Mint State

A mintage of 30,475 Capped Bust Right half eagles was accomplished in 1804, with seven die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the scarce BD-1 variety, with a Small 8 (John Dannreuther notes it is really a Normal 8) in the date and a graver’s line from the point of the shield to the eagle’s beak on the reverse. The BD-1 has a surviving population of 70-90 examples in all grades.
