1851 Humbert $50 PCGS MS63

Spectacular Choice Unc.

Lettered edge, 880 Thous. The octagonal ingots or “slugs” first produced in 1851 by the firm of Moffat & Co., operating as the United State Assay Office of Gold in San Francisco, rank among the most iconic coins ever issued in this country. Octagonal fifties were struck in 1851 and 1852 only. Several varieties exist, including those in 880 and 887 pure gold, with lettered and reeded edges, and with and without 50 at the central reverse, among other differences. The vast majority of survivors of these and similar Humbert fifties are found in grades ranging from VF to high AU. Mint State examples are significantly rarer. The PCGS population is only 2 with 2 higher, the latter both being MS63+ representatives. This particular example is highly lustrous and features a flashy, semi-prooflike obverse.

1855 Wass-Molitor $10 NGC AU58

Very Rare Borderline Unc.

The San Francisco Mint opened in 1854, but it was a cramped facility that also lacked sufficient parting acids to strike satisfactory quantities of .900 fine gold coins. West Coast commerce required a steady supply of freshly coined bullion, and since the official mint was not yet up to speed, two private minters stepped in to fill the gap. Kellogg & Co. produced twenty-dollar pieces only, while Wass Molitor & Co. produced ten, twenty, and fifty-dollar coins.
These necessity issues imitated Federal designs of their respective denominations, with the exception of the fifty dollar piece, which was more reminiscent of the Federal gold dollar. The ten-dollar piece featured a small, relatively close date with the final digit repaired on the obverse die with a circular plug. The minting activities of both Kellogg & Co. and Wass Molitor ceased once the San Francisco Mint was able to resume gold production. The NGC population is just 3 with three higher, none better than MS61.

1901-S Barber Quarter NGC VF35

Highly Sought-After Circ. Key

The 1901-S Barber quarter boasts one of the lowest mintages in the series (72,664 pieces) and it is the scarcest date overall. The majority of the survivorship grades no finer than Very Good, and collectible midgrade pieces are inherently rare. Housed in a very popular old NGC “Fatty” holder.

1920-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65

Tied for Highest Graded

The 1920-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is among the greatest rarities in the series, particularly in high grade.  In the absolute sense, it’s a trifle more plentiful than the 1927-D, the 1930-1932 melt rarities, and by an even smaller margin, the 1921. However, in Gem condition, the 1920-S excels — at this level, only the 1921 and 1927-D are considered rarer or more significant acquisitions. This, of course, excludes the uncollectible 1933 and the 1907 Ultra High Relief pattern. No meaningful quantities have ever turned up in European hoards, and it is likely that none were ever officially used in the foreign trade. The example offered here is lighter and brighter in hand. The NGC population is a mere 2 with none higher.
