1808/7 Capped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS61

According to Mint records, 55,578 Capped Bust Left half eagles were struck in 1808, the second year of the design. Four die varieties are known for the date, two with perfect dates and two struck from leftover obverse dies from 1807 that were over-dated and pressed into service. The remnants of the under-type 7 are plainly visible at the upper left and lower left of the final 8, and inside the top loop. The BD-1 is a rare variety, with fewer than three dozen examples thought to be extant in all grades. It probably accounted for 2,000-3,000 pieces of the reported mintage and is by far the rarest variety of the date. In hand, this example is considerably more lustrous and eye-appealing than seen in our images.

The mintage for the 1854 gold dollar was not as large as the preceding three P-mint gold dollar deliveries; however, it was still a respectable 855,502 pieces. It’s not surprising, therefore, that this issue remains popular among type collectors who desire an attractive representative of James Longacre’s Type One design. While the average collector would happily settle for an MS64 or MS65 example, gold specialists who pride themselves on unrivaled numismatic beauty should go for this beauty. The NGC population is just 10 with none higher.

Much scarcer than its Small Date counterpart, the Large Date 1854 double eagle continues to gain popularity among collectors as one of the premier Type One varieties in the series. It is a considerable condition rarity as well as an absolutely scarce variety, represented by only a small fraction of the total 1854 mintage of 757,899 pieces. This particular example exhibits an especially wholesome appearance. The PCGS population is just 15 with 8 higher.

1888-O Morgan Dollar NGC MS67

Here is a superb, attractively toned example of a true condition rarity. Its surfaces are satin-like in appearance and exceptionally well preserved. In hand, the patina is a bit lighter and the luster, somewhat brighter than seen in our images. Tied with just one other (which is ex-Eliasberg) for the highest graded by NGC. For its part, PCGS has graded just one MS67, with none higher. The aforementioned Eliasberg coin was last auctioned by us in 2014.
