Offered today are 2019 $100 American High Relief Gold Coins. These are the latest issue in a series of special releases from the US Mint. These coins have graded either SP-70 Enhanced Finish First day of Issue or SP-69 Ultra Cameo Enhanced Finish by NGC. These coins have been AUTHENTICALLY SIGNED by either Mike Castle or Kenneth Bressett. Currently the mint is selling these coins for $2240/coin un-graded.

A Gorgeous One

The 1907 High Reliefs are generally acknowledged as THE most beautifully designed circulation strike U.S. coins. They were the result of collaboration between sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens (who was encouraged to develop the design by President Theodore Roosevelt) and Chief Engraver Charles Barber of the Philadelphia Mint.  Each coin required three blows from the 150-ton medal press to completely bring up the design, and the planchets had to be annealed between each blow. The average time needed to strike each individual coin was 12 minutes, clearly too slow to strike any large number of coins. By running three medal presses simultaneously and scheduling numerous overtime shifts, the Mint was able to produce a reported 12,367 pieces, before production ceased in early January, enough to satisfy Roosevelt’s desire to showcase the new design to the world.

Four (Rare Ones) Of A Kind

The effects of the Panic of 1893 included the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, ending the massive mandated coinage of Morgan dollars the U.S. Mint was required to produce every year. Morgan dollar mintages were drastically reduced at all U.S. Mints in 1893, and the San Francisco Mint produced a series low business-strike mintage of just 100,000 pieces. Most of the small mintage was either widely circulated or melted in 1918, under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Accordingly, the 1893-S is the most elusive Morgan dollar in today’s market.
