Description

Chinese Gold Panda Coins

First issued in 1982, the Chinese Gold Panda has become one of the world’s most widely recognized and collected gold bullion coins. Each annual issue features the Temple of Heaven in Beijing on the obverse and, with the notable exception of 2002, a new Giant Panda design each year, giving the series considerably more collector appeal than most conventional bullion coins.

Gold Pandas are struck in .999 fine gold and are legal tender of the People’s Republic of China. Over the life of the series, both the face-value denominations and gold weights have changed, so the denomination alone should never be used to determine the gold content of an older Panda.

The most significant changes occurred in 2001, when China substantially increased the Yuan denominations assigned to the standard bullion sizes, and again in 2016, when the series changed from traditional troy-ounce weights to the metric system. The current five standard Gold Pandas contain 1 gram, 3 grams, 8 grams, 15 grams and 30 grams of pure gold.
