1825 Capped Bust Dime NGC PR65

According to some estimates, only six Proof 1825 dimes are known in all grades. Currently, the NGC population is just three, including this one and one graded higher. And the PCGS population is only one. While not apparent in our images, this example is richly and attractively toned in turquoise hues with traces of violet. The surfaces are fully reflective, including within the reverse shield stripes – a trait that PL business strikes are unlikely to exhibit. This is a truly rare and desirable coin!

1830 Capped Bust Dime NGC PF66

NGC and PCGS combined show just seven grading events for Proof 1830 dimes, two of them being cameo examples. And considering that fewer than a half dozen examples are believed to be extant, it’s quite possible that some of the population data is duplicated. This is the only PR66 graded by either service, with none higher. Though not apparent in our images, it’s richly and attractively toned, as well as fully reflective. It also displays some pleasing cameo contrast.

1899-O Barber Dime NGC MS67 Star

A Star is Born

The 1899-O Barber dime is neither one of the numerous low-mintage series issues produced to the extent of fewer than 1 million pieces, nor is it anyone’s idea of a key issue within the series for other reasons, given its typical O-mint production of 2.65 million coins. It is however, a conditional and strike rarity. By the time of its production in 1899, the series’ novelty — and fleeting it was — had completely worn off, and few collectors of the era set aside examples of any circulation strikes, regardless of mintmark or lack thereof. Angle your neck either far left or far right for a better view! Each side of this coin shows considerable cameo contrast. In researching it, we discovered that we had auctioned t in our April 2012, Central States sale, lot 5067.

Excellent Bands to Have

The circumstances that led to this odd strike rarity have never been fully explained, but it remains a great and celebrated issue when found with fully split central bands; David Lange makes the interesting point in his series reference that since the dies for all three mints were made at the Philadelphia Mint die shop, there should have been nothing fundamentally different about the P-mint strikes. The example we offer here is brilliant (noticeably more so than seen in our images), color free and highly appealing looking. The NGC population is only 8 with 11 higher.

1796 Draped Bust Dime NGC MS65

Attractive Gem, First Year

Extremely well struck and (while not apparent in our images) attractively toned in shades of violet, turquoise and mint-green. The 1796 Draped Bust, Small Eagle dime is always in demand from type collectors and series specialists, alike. Aside from its status as the first year of the denomination, it garners special attention as the first year of a two-year design type, since the Small Eagle reverse was retired after 1797. NGC population of only 8 with 10 (including one PL) graded higher. Listed at $115,000 in the CDN CPG, $125,000 in the NGC price guide and $80,000 in Trends.
