Exceptionally Rare 1879 Pattern Dollar J-1605, Pollock 1801 NGC PR65 Cameo

The Judd reference calls this William Barber obverse similar to the famous “Washlady” design, but to our eyes there are also similarities to the Coiled Hair Stella obverse. Liberty’s hair is tightly coiled about her head in a bun, with two flowing ribbons in back and a beaded headband inscribed LIBERTY. IN GOD WE TRUST and 13 stars appear around the rim, date below. The reverse shows a rather scrawny eagle inside a laurel wreath with evenly matched berry pairs. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the rim — the letters irregularly spaced — and ONE DOLLAR is below. The motto is in small letters above the eagle. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
We wrote of this design in the Lemus-Queller catalog, “In a classic case of closing the barn door after the horse has got out, the Mint in 1879 produced a plethora of silver dollar pattern designs aimed at supplanting the Morgan dollar design of the inexperienced assistant engraver, George T. Morgan — a design that, of course, was struck by the many millions beginning the prior year, in 1878. While the Morgan dollar design saw much criticism in its time, it is well-loved today. If this was meant as an improvement, it is not. … If this is truly a William Barber design as Judd maintains (others differ), it is worth noting that he would have been 71 or 72 when he executed this die. (William Barber died unexpectedly on Aug. 31, 1879, after catching a chill on vacation while being in the surf off of Atlantic City, New Jersey.)”This is the only NGC PR65 Cameo example to appear on their census report with none graded higher. 1879 $1 Pattern Metric Dollar PCGS PR64

Judd-1624, Pollock-1820, High R.7. The head of Liberty faces left in this design by George T. Morgan, her hair done up in a bun and tied with a ribbon bearing an incused LIBERTY. E PLURIBUS UNUM is above, with stars seven left and six right, date below. The reverse portrays a wreath of cotton, wheat, and corn. An inner circle of dots encloses 895.8 S. / 4.2–G. / 100–C. / 25 GRAMS. A “descending dove” shape surrounds DEO EST GLORIA (“God is glory”). UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR are at the rim. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Only four examples of this pattern are believed known. This is the sole highest example graded by PCGS.

1879 Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS65

One of the Very Finest Known

Production of double eagles declined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1879, with a reported mintage of 207,600 pieces. Many circulated survivors are available in today’s market, but Mint State coins are rare. And when it comes to choice uncirculated or better examples, we’re talking RARE! NGC and PCGS combined, have graded only 30 pieces MS63 or higher. Better yet, this is the sole MS65 graded by NGC, with just one higher and PCGS has graded a single MS65, with none higher. This one displays a sharp strike and satiny luster, which is much more pronounced in-hand.

1879-CC Capped Die Morgan Dollar PCGS MS65

A Top 100 Variety. The Capped Die 1879-CC dollar has long been known, but decades ago, they were shunned by collectors who thought something was not quite right about the mintmark area. Scholarship has made great strides since those days, and now the so-called Capped Die coins are worth a premium in the better grades of Uncirculated. The one offered here is noticeably lighter, as well as more lustrous and appealing, than seen in our drab images. The PCGS population is only 11 with 5 (barely) higher, as all of the latter are 65+ examples.

1879-O Morgan Dollar NGC MS66

Tied for Highest Graded 

After an intermission of nearly two decades since the Mint closed in 1861, New Orleans resumed coinage production in 1879, following terms of the Bland-Allison Act that Congress passed a year earlier. The year 1879 saw the production of 2,325 double eagles, the only coins of the Type Three design that were minted in Louisiana. The facility also coined 2,887,000 silver dollars. Other denominations were added in later years through 1909 when that Mint was permanently closed. Mint State 1879-O Morgan dollars are not particularly rare, although Gems are elusive and finer examples are rarely encountered. In hand, this specimen is lighter and brighter than seen in our images. The NGC population is only 11 with not a single representative graded higher.
