1879 Morgan Dollar PCGS MS67

Tied for Highest Graded

Offered here is a frosty, white example with exemplary surfaces and a great overall appearance. Not particularly tough to come by through the MS66 grade level, but very rarely seen in this state of preservation. The last PCGS representative we auctioned was all the way back in 2007! Tied with 7 others for the highest graded by PCGS.

1879-CC Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS60

This 79-CC Rarity is no Dollar!

The 1879-CC Liberty double eagle is an elusive issue, from a small mintage of 10,708 pieces (the second-lowest double eagle mintage of the 1870s from the mint in Carson City). Traditionally, the 1879-CC was thought to be even more elusive than it is today, but a small hoard of examples surfaced in the 1990’s, to augment the meager supply. Most of the hoard coins were in the XF-AU grade range, so the issue remains very rare in Mint State condition. The NGC population is only 5 with 6 higher.

1879-CC Morgan Dollar NGC MS65

Flashy Gem, Super Popular Morgan

For practical collecting purposes, none of the Carson City issues in the Morgan dollar series are particularly difficult to acquire in circulated condition, although the 1889-CC is far more expensive than its counterparts. Cross over into Mint State and little changes, although a few dates become noticeably more challenging to locate in eye-appealing condition. Among these is the 1879-CC. This is the second-scarcest issue in Uncirculated condition overall, and in MS65, only the 1889-CC and 1893-CC are rarer. The 1879-CC, in high grade, is sometimes referred to as “the other Carson City key.” The one offered here is sharply detailed and flashy, with highly desirable semi-prooflike fields. Only 9 have been graded higher by NGC.

1879-S Liberty Double Eagles PCGS MS60

Tougher date; Minor Premium

From a robust mintage of 1.2 million pieces, the 1879-S Liberty double eagle was heavily circulated at the time of issue and many examples were used to settle large accounts in foreign trade. Many coins have been repatriated from overseas holdings in recent years, but most examples seen have excessive bag-marks from rough storage and transport. Mint State coins are scarce in today’s market and high-grade examples are rare.

1879-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS62

Rare Unc. S-Mint $20 Lib

For all practical purposes, MS62 is the optimal collectible grade for this San Francisco date. While all Mint State coins are scarce, the value increases dramatically above the MS62 level. By way of example, to our knowledge, the last MS63 – a PCGS example – to have been auctioned brought $29,375 more than three years ago. None have been graded higher by NGC. Listed at $15,600 in the CDN CPG, $14,600 in the NGC price guide and $16,500 in Trends.
