1893-CC Liberty Eagle NGC AU58

The Carson City Mint struck a small production of 14,000 Liberty eagles in 1893, the last year of coinage operations at the famous Western facility. The coins were released into circulation and few high-quality examples were saved for numismatic purposes. As might be expected, the 1893-CC is an elusive issue in all grades today, with most examples seen in the VF-XF grade range. AU58 examples are scarce and Mint State specimens are very rare.

The NGC population is 59 with 21 graded higher.

Four (Rare Ones) Of A Kind

The effects of the Panic of 1893 included the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, ending the massive mandated coinage of Morgan dollars the U.S. Mint was required to produce every year. Morgan dollar mintages were drastically reduced at all U.S. Mints in 1893, and the San Francisco Mint produced a series low business-strike mintage of just 100,000 pieces. Most of the small mintage was either widely circulated or melted in 1918, under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Accordingly, the 1893-S is the most elusive Morgan dollar in today’s market.

The Panic of 1893 had far-reaching financial consequences, including the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. Freed from the obligation to produce massive quantities of unneeded silver dollars, the United States Mint drastically reduced Morgan dollar production at all active mints in 1893. Only 378,000 examples were struck at the Philadelphia facility that year, making the 1893 a challenging date in the series, especially in grades above the MS65 level. The NGC population is just 5 with a single (MS66+) example graded higher.

The 1893-CC dollar is an issue that is hard for collectors to resist since it has so much going for it. It is the final year of issue for the Carson City mint, it has a relatively low mintage of 677,000 pieces, and better-grade Uncirculated pieces are a semi-key issue in the Morgan series. Two problems are widely known by collectors for this issue, weakness of strike and pervasive bag-marks. This particular coin is fully struck in the centers, unlike many Mint State survivors.
