You Should “C” This

A paltry mintage of 3,677 quarter eagles was accomplished by the Charlotte Mint in 1855. That production total is the smallest from the North Carolina facility for any individual date in the series (the 1843-C Small Date coins represent only part of the mintage for 1843). Perhaps no more than 100 1855-C quarter eagles are extant in all grades, though inflated population figures might lead one to believe otherwise.   Mint State specimens are very rare and this is one of just five at this grade level with but three higher. When tilted just slightly, this coin displays lighter color and considerably more luster than indicated in our pictures.

(1831-1834) Bechtler $2.50

K-8 Beaded, with 75G PCGS MS62

Throughout the entire Bechtler coinage era, lasting from 1831 until about 1850, the family coined nine varieties of $2.50 gold pieces. This coin represents the K-8 variety, with RUTHERFORD in a small circle in the center of the obverse and the weight 75 G. below the 20 C. Based on current rarity ratings published in the March 2017 Kagin’s catalog featuring the Dr. Chris Allan Collection, no more than 200 examples survive from all nine mulings. The average grade of all PCGS certified Bechtler quarter eagles is AU53. The present example is far finer than the typical survivor and is the second best of the Kagin-8 die pairing that PCGS has examined. The finest known example realized $123,375 in the March 2017 offering of the Allan Collection. Thus, this coin has a PCGS population of only 1 with 1 graded higher. Lighter in color and far more lustrous in hand than seen in our images.

1834 Classic Quarter Eagle NGC MS65

A Real Classic

The 1834 remains the most plentiful Classic Head quarter eagle issue in high grade, despite its mintage of little more than 112,000 pieces being significantly lower than the production totals of the following two years. In the years leading up to 1834, gold coinage did not actively circulate in the United States, as the coins contained more bullion value than their face value, prompting individuals to melt the coins down at a profit. In 1834, William Kneass’s design marked a reduction in weight from 4.37 gm to 4.18 gm. The weight reduction returned the gold value of the quarter eagle to its face value, allowing this denomination to once again circulate domestically. This one is sharply detailed and highly lustrous with flashy, semi-prooflike surfaces. The NGC population is just 15 (two of which are star coins) with two higher.

1838-C Quarter Eagle NGC AU58

Gone with the Wind – Charlotte (Mint)

The 1838-C quarter eagle is an extremely popular coin among early gold enthusiasts. It is a first-year-of-issue and one of just two Charlotte quarter eagles that use the Classic Head, obverse mintmark design. All known examples exhibit a re-punched mintmark, that was initially entered too low. Writing in his Charlotte Mint gold coins reference (2008), Doug Winter says the 1838-C quarter eagle “Usually seen in VF and EF grades, it becomes very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and rare in Uncirculated.” NGC has recognized only a dozen uncirculated pieces.
