1907 Wire Edge High Relief $20 PCGS MS64

Still Worth Way Over Melt

Often called the most beautiful American coin design, the Saint-Gaudens double eagle exhibited intricate treatment of the drapery and equal depth of the reverse design, rendering a three-dimensional appearance rarely seen on American coins before or since. Barbara Baxter writes in her chapter on “Coins and Medals” published in Augustus Saint-Gaudens 1848-1907, A Master of American Sculpture: Saint-Gaudens coins and medals set a new standard for American numismatic art, and the precedent that he established resulted in the commissioning of other professional artists, notably his former associates Bela Lyon Pratt, James Earle Fraser, and A.A. Weinman, to redesign other denominations of the coinage. Listed at $25,400 in the CDN CPG and $25,000 in the PCGS price guide.

1907 Wire Rim High Relief Double Eagle NGC PR61

Rare Proof

Proof High Reliefs are one of the most divisive issues in U.S. numismatics. Generally opinion falls into either the “yes” or “no” categories with little uncertainty or middle ground allowed by either side. PCGS is in the “no” camp as they do not certify proof High Reliefs, and NGC is in the “yes” camp. Among the determinants for proofs, according to NGC, is a “distinctive texture and satiny luster” according to Scott Schechter, but more specifically it was the use of the collar that was used to strike the Edge 3 Ultra High Reliefs in March-April 1907 and again on December 31 of that year. We believe that a scratch in the left obverse field accounts for the less-than-choice grade and makes this coin more affordable than it otherwise would be. In hand, when tilted slightly under a light, it is lighter than seen in our images. Listed at $24,600 in the NGC price guide.

2015-W $100 High Relief PCGS MS 70 “PL” Proof Like First Strike Moy

Moy pop of only 20 coins
Out of the entire 50,000 mintage, PCGS has only graded 123 total MS 70 PL coins.  That is .002 of a percent that made the PL!  That’s quite a small amount.  Since there initial release in 2015, we’ve submitted thousands of coins and none have made a 69 or 70 PL designation.  It’s a very good chance, these are the only coins available.
We have not offered a 2015 $100 HR MS 70 PL Moy since January 2017.  A very elusive coin!!
