Flashy, Highly Lustrous

This coin looks much better in person than seen in our images – it’s considerably flashier, more lustrous and appealing in-hand! Double eagle production at the New Orleans Mint rebounded out of the small four-figure range in 1857, reaching 30,000 pieces. However, this issue circulated extensively and its modern-day availability is limited. Circulated pieces are occasionally seen, but the finer AU-level coins are in high demand since only a few Mint State pieces exist. 1877-S Liberty Double Eagles PCGS MS61

The San Francisco Mint struck large numbers of double eagles throughout the second half of the 19th century and 1877 was certainly no exception. A mintage of more than 1.7 million Liberty double eagles was accomplished that year. The coins were used to settle large accounts in both foreign and domestic trade, and few high-quality examples were saved for numismatic purposes. Accordingly, most examples seen today are heavily bag-marked specimens recovered from European holdings or worn circulated pieces that fulfilled their intended function in the hard money economy of the Western United States. 1879-S Liberty Double Eagles NGC/PCGS MS61

Ten Tough $20 Lib. S-mints

The San Francisco Mint continued to be the chief producer of double eagles in 1879, striking more than 1.2 million coins (about 1 million pieces more than all three other mints combined). However, Uncirculated examples are seldom offered finer than MS61 and are decidedly rare finer than MS62. If you’re looking for one of those MS62’s you should know that it’s likely to cost more than three times the amount of these MS61’s. Listed at $3,750 in both the CDN CPG and the NGC price guide and $4,250 in the PCGS price guide.

1860-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS61

Rare Mint State

 The 1860-S Type One Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 544,950 pieces, a substantial production total in absolute terms, but slightly smaller than average for a San Francisco issue from this period. The coins were released into the channels of commerce, where they circulated heavily for many years, suffering the usual wear and attrition along the way. Few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary numismatists and the issue is rare in Mint State grades today. The current PCGS population is 16 with 12 higher. This particular example is a bit lighter and brighter than seen on our images. Listed at $16,300 in the CDN CPG and $12,000 in the PCGS price guide.

First Year of Issue 1838 Liberty Eagle PCGS AU53

The Philadelphia Mint struck a meager total of 7,200 ten dollar gold pieces in 1838, after a 34-year hiatus. The coins featured Christian Gobrecht’s brand new Liberty design, which was modified slightly the next year, creating a short-lived design subtype for collectors. As might be expected, the 1838 Liberty eagle is an elusive issue, especially in high grade. 

The PCGS population stands at just 3 with 19 higher. The example offered here is lighter, brighter and flashier than seen in our images. Listed at $23,000 in the CDN CPG and $21,000 in the PCGS price guide.
