1881 Morgan Dollar NGC MS67

Tied for Highest Graded

Contrary to how this coin appears in our images, it’s colorful, vibrant and very attractive. The availability of the 1881 Morgan dollar steadily declines in succeeding grades finer than MS63, but it remains at least marginally available through MS66. Not so in MS67; at the Superb Gem level, the 1881 Morgan is extremely rare. The NGC population is just 3 with none higher.

1893 Morgan Dollar NGC MS66

Just 1 Graded (Only Slightly) Higher

The Panic of 1893 had far-reaching financial consequences, including the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. Freed from the obligation to produce massive quantities of unneeded silver dollars, the United States Mint drastically reduced Morgan dollar production at all active mints in 1893. Only 378,000 examples were struck at the Philadelphia facility that year, making the 1893 a challenging date in the series, especially in grades above the MS65 level. The NGC population is just 5 with a single (MS66+) example graded higher.

1883-S Morgan Dollar PCGS MS65

Not Your Everyday S-Mint Morgan

Although heavily touted as a conditionally scarce date in Mint State, the 1883-S Morgan remains collectible in grades through MS64, and is frequently offered at auction in this range. It is the Gem grade level from where this issue draws its fame. In MS65, the 1883-S Morgan is a grand rarity in absolute numbers, and in the context of the series, is prohibitively rare. This particular example is sharp, flashy and virtually white, with considerable eye-appeal. The PCGS population is just 21 with 5 higher.

1879-CC Morgan Dollar NGC MS65

Flashy Gem, Super Popular Morgan

For practical collecting purposes, none of the Carson City issues in the Morgan dollar series are particularly difficult to acquire in circulated condition, although the 1889-CC is far more expensive than its counterparts. Cross over into Mint State and little changes, although a few dates become noticeably more challenging to locate in eye-appealing condition. Among these is the 1879-CC. This is the second-scarcest issue in Uncirculated condition overall, and in MS65, only the 1889-CC and 1893-CC are rarer. The 1879-CC, in high grade, is sometimes referred to as “the other Carson City key.” The one offered here is sharply detailed and flashy, with highly desirable semi-prooflike fields. Only 9 have been graded higher by NGC.

1881-S Morgan Dollar PCGS MS68PL

Spectacular, 1 of Only 5

This example exceeds the quality of almost all other PL 1881-S dollars. There are some splashes of delicate golden toning (which are far more subtle than seen in our images) around the borders, but most of each side is brilliant. The reflectivity of the fields is captivating, but the true hallmark of this coin is its state of preservation. Liberty’s cheek is essentially flawless. If you like it, based on our pictures, you will love it in hand. Tied with four others for the highest graded by PCGS.

1901 Morgan Dollar NGC MS63

Choice Mint State

An adequate mintage of 6.9 million Morgan dollars was accomplished in 1901, but the issue is more elusive than the respectable production total would suggest, especially in high grade. Many coins were released into circulation and suffered heavy wear and attrition over the years. Of the coins held in government storage, many were probably melted in 1918, under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Relatively few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. Today, the 1901 Morgan dollar can be found in circulated grades without much difficulty, while lower Mint State specimens are scarce, and high grade examples are rare. Lighter and brighter than seen in our images.

1879-CC Capped Die Morgan Dollar NGC MS64 DPL

Just 1 Graded Higher

VAM 3. Top 100 Variety. A generation ago, the Capped Die ’79-CC was considered a “poor man’s” 1879-CC and was deeply discounted over its “perfect mintmark” counterpart. The advent of population data has drastically changed the pricing structure for this rarer variety, and attitudes have followed, with the Capped Die coins now fully accepted by the collecting community. This particular example offers a flashy appearance, enhanced by the strong cameo contrast between the reflective fields and frosted devices. The NGC population is just 9 with 1 higher.

1879 Morgan Dollar PCGS MS66 DMPL

Tied for Highest Graded

Even though a large number of examples of the 1879 silver dollar were struck for circulation, gem (or better) DMPL survivors are very rarely seen. This particular example offers ultimate contrast and reflectivity on untoned silver-white surfaces that are free of mentionable marks. The highly desired “silver-on-black” effect is seen in full force when this coin is tilted under a light and it looks far more impressive in hand than seen in our images. Tied with three others for the highest graded by PCGS.

1893-CC Morgan Dollar PCGS MS64

Virtually Color-Free

The 1893-CC dollar is an issue that is hard for collectors to resist since it has so much going for it. It is the final year of issue for the Carson City mint, it has a relatively low mintage of 677,000 pieces, and better-grade Uncirculated pieces are a semi-key issue in the Morgan series. Two problems are widely known by collectors for this issue, weakness of strike and pervasive bag-marks. This particular coin is fully struck in the centers, unlike many Mint State survivors. Listed at $15,700 in the CDN CPG and $15,000 in both the PCGS price guide and Trends.

Eye Grabbing (Not Just Catching) 1883 Morgan Dollar PCGS MS66DPL

The 1883 Morgan dollar is a challenging issue in the Deep Mirror Prooflike category, particularly in high grade. Premium Gems, such as this are rare. The example herein offered is brilliant and displays considerable cameo contrast on each side. In hand, it is far more impressive than seen in our images. Additionally, while our pictures make it appear as if it has some toning, it is actually color free. The PCGS population is only 14 with 2 higher, both of the latter being MS66+ examples.
