1808/7 Capped Bust Half Eagle NGC MS61

According to Mint records, 55,578 Capped Bust Left half eagles were struck in 1808, the second year of the design. Four die varieties are known for the date, two with perfect dates and two struck from leftover obverse dies from 1807 that were over-dated and pressed into service. The remnants of the under-type 7 are plainly visible at the upper left and lower left of the final 8, and inside the top loop. The BD-1 is a rare variety, with fewer than three dozen examples thought to be extant in all grades. It probably accounted for 2,000-3,000 pieces of the reported mintage and is by far the rarest variety of the date. In hand, this example is considerably more lustrous and eye-appealing than seen in our images.

1851 “887” Reeded Edge Humbert $50 NGC MS61

Very Rare (and Heavy)

The importance of the 1851 $50 gold coins can scarcely be overemphasized. Ask any advanced collector of Territorial gold to name the most significant and memorable coinage design from the early California Gold Rush period, and the Humbert-U.S. Assay Office octagonal fifty dollars will likely be the first named. Until the commemorative Panama-Pacific fifty dollar pieces of 1915, the 1851-52 Humbert-Assay Office fifties remained the only large octagonal gold coins struck under the auspices of the United States Mint (the Assay Office was a provisional government mint), although later California private coiners struck round fifty dollar coins (Kellogg in 1854-55 and Wass, Molitor in 1855). The NGC population is only 8 with 12 higher.

Tough One (Twenty, Actually)

The 1876-CC Liberty double eagle claims the largest mintage of the series, at 138,441 pieces. Surprisingly, it’s not the most available CC-mint twenty in today’s market, and the issue was virtually unobtainable in high grade before a hoard of several dozen examples surfaced in the mid-1990s. Like most Type Two double eagles, the 1876-CC is seen much more often in circulated grades than Mint State, but a number of Mint State examples exist, and they are quite popular with branch mint type collectors.

1833 Capped Head Quarter Eagle NGC MS61

As expected from a coin with only 4,160 pieces produced, many known mint state examples have semi-prooflike fields as almost all the mintage is essentially a first-strike. Fortunately, this one is no exception in that regard. A mere 60 to 80 pieces of this date are believed known. Mass meltings account for the scarcity of this and other early quarter eagle and half eagle issues. The NGC population is just 8 with 14 higher.

1803 Draped Bust Half Dollar NGC MS61

Highly Impressive Mint State

Large 3, Small Reverse Stars. Ex: “Col.” E.H.R. Green. This impressive looking Mint State piece is one of just eight that NGC has certified as MS60 or finer, for all four die varieties, and only three of those are graded higher than this example. Both sides display vibrant luster at the centers with bands of gold and sea-green toning. This date is underrated in Mint State. While type collectors may have their pick of uncirculated coins dated 1806 and 1807, date collectors must look long and hard to find one dated 1803. This particular representative is considerably lighter and flashier than portrayed in our images.
