1884-CC Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Tough Unc. Twenty Lib.CGS MS62

No circulation strikes were manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint in 1884, placing even greater demand on Carson City double eagles minted that year (81,139 coins). However, survivors are generally seen in XF and AU grades, often with problems, and they are seldom offered in mint condition above MS62. The one offered here exhibits an attractive orange-gold hue.

1856-O Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC MS62

Mint $2.50 Rarity

The New Orleans Mint struck only 21,100 examples of the 1856-O quarter eagle, a denomination that was unloved and neglected in favor of the half eagle and (after 1849) the double eagle throughout much of its history. San Francisco, in only its third year of operation, also struck 1856-S quarter eagles for the first time since opening, and managed to best New Orleans by a margin of more than 3 to 1. Whether these comparative mintages were an early sign of the increasing decrepitude that would overtake the Southern mint by the early 20th century, or merely an indication of the continuation of the hard-money tradition of the Old West that began a few years earlier with the Gold Rush of 1849, is not readily known today. Nonetheless, 1856-O quarter eagles are quite elusive in Mint State. This is one of only four so-graded by NGC with none higher.

1869-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS62

Rare “69-S”, but not DDO Cent

The 1869-S twenty dollar is plentiful in Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated grades. However, Mint State examples are scarce through MS62 and rare any finer, most being in the MS60 to MS61 range, the finest condition collectors are likely to encounter of this issue. The NGC population is 17 with 8 higher, three of the latter being MS62+ examples.

1857-S Liberty Half Eagle PCGS MS62

Another “Fishing for Bass”?

Ex: H.W. Bass Jr. Collection. Of the six 1857-S half eagles offered in the three Harry Bass gold sales, this piece was the finest. At the time (1998), it was the highest certified example at PCGS, and it is still housed in the old blue label Generation 4.0 PCGS holder (with barcode on the back) from that sale. The 1857-S half eagle remains scarce in Mint State to this day, and rare with original, non-seawater surfaces.

1797 Draped Bust Half Dime NGC MS62

Rare, Mint State

Three distinct obverse design subtypes exist for the 1797 half dimes, featuring 13 stars, 15 stars, or 16 stars. This, the 15 Stars variety, has an arrangement of eight stars to the left and seven stars to the right. It is clearly the most plentiful of the three, and yet, only a few hundred examples survive in all grades, mostly well worn, damaged, or both. Only a few dozen Mint State examples are thought to exist. The NGC population is a mere 1 with 4 higher. When tilted just slightly under a light, this specimen is much lighter, as well as more colorful and lustrous than seen in our images.
