1907-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS65

Rare Gem, Last-Year-Of-Issue

This San Francisco issue is a significant condition rarity in the Liberty Head series. Although more than 2.1 million pieces were minted, fewer than 40 survivors are certified in Gem condition, between NGC and PCGS, combined. As a final-year issue in the Liberty Head series, it’s possible the San Francisco Mint turned its attentions elsewhere and used little care in releasing the freshly minted coins into commerce or storage. Regardless of the reason, most survivors are heavily bag-marked. The NGC population is only 19 with none higher. Listed at $20,000 in the CDN CPG and $21,000 in the NGC price guide.

1903-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Tied for Highest Graded

The 1903-S is a plentiful and largely unheralded issue, that only begins to command a real numismatic premium at the near-Gem grade level. This is one of only 18 to have received this grade from PCGS with none higher. The example offered here exhibits a very bold strike, satiny surfaces and pleasing orange-gold color.

1857-S S.S. Central America $20 Liberty PCGS MS65

“Head Turner”/“Turned Head”

The discovery of the thousands of Type One twenties in mint condition from the salvage of the S.S. Central America in the late 1980s proved to be a boon for collectors since this first design type was rarely encountered in Uncirculated grades before these pieces entered the market. One characteristic common to all of these salvaged twenties is the extraordinary mint luster. Because the coins lay undisturbed more than two miles below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean they were unaffected by the abrasive effects of salt water that normally subdues the luster on gold coins found on ship wrecks found in more shallow waters.

1883-S Morgan Dollar PCGS MS65

Not Your Everyday S-Mint Morgan

Although heavily touted as a conditionally scarce date in Mint State, the 1883-S Morgan remains collectible in grades through MS64, and is frequently offered at auction in this range. It is the Gem grade level from where this issue draws its fame. In MS65, the 1883-S Morgan is a grand rarity in absolute numbers, and in the context of the series, is prohibitively rare. This particular example is sharp, flashy and virtually white, with considerable eye-appeal. The PCGS population is just 21 with 5 higher.

1879-CC Morgan Dollar NGC MS65

Flashy Gem, Super Popular Morgan

For practical collecting purposes, none of the Carson City issues in the Morgan dollar series are particularly difficult to acquire in circulated condition, although the 1889-CC is far more expensive than its counterparts. Cross over into Mint State and little changes, although a few dates become noticeably more challenging to locate in eye-appealing condition. Among these is the 1879-CC. This is the second-scarcest issue in Uncirculated condition overall, and in MS65, only the 1889-CC and 1893-CC are rarer. The 1879-CC, in high grade, is sometimes referred to as “the other Carson City key.” The one offered here is sharply detailed and flashy, with highly desirable semi-prooflike fields. Only 9 have been graded higher by NGC.
