The San Francisco issue is the scarcest of the three 1922 Peace dollars, especially in Mint State. The fact that its mintage of nearly 17.5 million pieces exceeds that of the 1922-D by more than 1.5 million pieces is a non-factor. Throughout the Peace dollar series there is an unbroken rule that for each year this denomination was coined, the San Francisco issue is rarer in Gem or better grades than either the Philadelphia or Denver counterparts. Mintage totals play no part in this. Many researchers suggest the lower survival rate of S-mint dollars in high grade is due to more active circulation on the West Coast, and in some cases bags of Uncirculated coins still in government vaults were just moved more frequently, reducing the grades of the coins contained. This Gem is noticeably brighter when viewed up close and personal. The PCGS population is just 20 with a single (MS66+) example graded higher.

1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo Nickel PCGS MS66

The 1937-D Three-Legged variety is the result of a heavily eroded tail die being vigorously lapped in an effort to smooth out the fields for continued coinage. Effacing the bison’s forward right leg was an accidental consequence that may have gone completely unnoticed by mint employees. But coins struck after the fact have become one of the most sought-after varieties of the entire Buffalo nickel series. Available for a price through MS64, the Three-Legged variety becomes scarce in Gem condition, and anything finer is a great rarity that most collectors can only dream of owning. The one offered here exhibits an even, light golden patina. The PCGS population is only 12 with 3 higher, each of the latter being 66+.

1914 Barber Half Dollar NGC MS66

The 1914 has the lowest mintage of the Barber half dollars at 124,230 pieces, helping to make it one of the key dates in the series. A few hundred examples have been certified through Very Fine. While the population declines in finer grades, the issue can still be located with patience and searching through about MS64. Gems are rare and higher-grade specimens are virtually unobtainable. This is the only MS66 graded by NGC with none higher. Here is an eye-catching, virtually color-free example.
