Most of the S-Mint double eagles coined in 1862 entered circulation, and today the average certified grade is just below AU50. The S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic treasure recoveries contributed 190 examples to the numismatic marketplace. Despite the appearance of those coins in the last two decades, this issue us still quite rare in uncirculated grades. The one offered here is noticeably more lustrous and attractive than seen in our images. The current NGC population stands at 11 with 36 higher.

The 1865 Liberty twenty claims a nominal mintage of 351,175 pieces. Before the era of recent shipwreck finds, this date was seldom encountered above the VF-XF grade level. Fortunately, 320 examples of the 1865 were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic. Most of the recovered coins were in higher AU- Mint state grades, all the way up to MS65. Only 18,000 eagles were minted in New Orleans throughout 1855, as gold coin production shifted to the new San Francisco Mint, which had opened the previous year. Apparently, very few were saved as this issue is rarely seen in higher grades. The NGC census stands at just 14 with none higher. Although the San Francisco Mint struck slightly more than 2,000,000 double eagles in 1899, many of them were used in foreign banking and business transactions. Additionally, many of the extant examples were repatriated from European holdings in recent decades. This very sharply struck examples is tied with ten others for the highest graded by NGC. This San Francisco issue is a significant condition rarity in the Liberty Head series. Although more than 2.1 million pieces were minted, fewer than three dozen pieces are certified in Gem condition. As a final-year issue in the Liberty Head series, it is possible the San Francisco Mint turned its attentions elsewhere and used little care in releasing the freshly minted coins into commerce or storage. Most survivors are heavily bag-marked. Luckily, there are a few exceptions and this coin is one of them. It is one of nineteen so graded by NGC, with none higher. Proof High Reliefs are one of the most divisive issues in U.S. numismatics. Generally opinion falls into either the “yes” or “no” categories with little uncertainty or middle ground allowed by either side. PCGS is in the “no” camp as they do not certify proof High Reliefs, and NGC is in the “yes” camp. Among the determinants for proofs, according to NGC, is a “distinctive texture and satiny luster” according to Scott Schechter, but more specifically it was the use of the collar that was used to strike the Edge 3 Ultra High Reliefs in March-April 1907 and again on December 31 of that year. We believe that a scratch in the left obverse field accounts for the less-than-choice grade and makes this coin more affordable than it otherwise would be. Now, this Medal was NOT space flown, but they were specially struck in gold and only given to people who WORKED on the Apollo 11 project. People that were all a part of one of the most historic moment’s in World history.
The obverse of the Medal depicts an Astronaut, presumably Neil Armstrong, boldly facing forward carrying the American flag. The date JULY 20, 1969 is seen in front, with the lunar landscape, lander and the Earth all in the background.
The reverse has the name of the three Astronauts who made that historic journey (Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Edwin Aldrin), Neil’s famous quote as he stepped out into the Sea of Tranquility, APOLLO 11 and a depiction of the slingshot approach the spacecraft took to the Moon.
It is struck from over a half an ounce of gold (18.17g). This could be the Finest we’ve seen of the issue and a nice piece to commemorate this milestone moment exactly 50 years ago today…

The 1885 has been recognized for more than a century as the coin to have, the key to the set of Liberty nickels. Only 1.4 million pieces were struck and pieces were set aside shortly after this tiny mintage became known; although by the time the general public was aware of it most coins of this date had been in circulation for some time. The availability of the 1885 shows a typical bell curve. At NGC, MS60 pieces show only two pieces certified, numbers gradually increase to the MS64 grade, then quickly taper off to the ultimate grade of MS67. Moffat & Co., in its role as semiofficial branch mint and United States Assay Office of Gold in California, struck both over-dated (1852/1) and normal-date 1852 ten dollar gold pieces of 884 fineness using the Humbert nameplate on the reverse. Most survivors are well circulated, and true uncirculated examples are rare. In fact, the NGC population is a mere two with one higher. The most prominent city in Ancient Greece militarily and economically, Athens had at its disposal an almost inexhaustible supply of silver from the mines it controlled at Laurion. This mine would be instrumental as Athenian influence increased in the region. To facilitate this expansion, a large supply of coinage was necessary, both for international economy and as a means of declaring Athems’ dominance in the region. The famous “owl” silver coinage was introduced around 520 BC, featuring the helmeted head of Athena, and on the reverse, the standing figure of an owl, her sacred bird. Over time, the design of the owls became more streamlined, culminating in the naturalistic style of the coins on offer here.
Struck around the time period of the Peloponnesian War (431 to 404 BC), these ancient trade coins formed the basis of the Greek economy in antiquity and circulated widely in the Mediterranean region and beyond. Athenian “owls” are a good candidate for being the most famous coins of antiquity, and provide a link to the history and style of the ancient world that is without parallel.
