John Grover Kellogg was one of the most respected assayers and coiners in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. He was involved in many of the preeminent refining operations of the period, partnering with the likes of John Moffat, G.F. Richter, and Augustus Humbert from 1849 through 1860. In 1854, these $20 gold pieces served a vital role in commerce during the time between the closure of the United State Assay Office and the full operation of the San Francisco Mint, which opened in April of that year.

1879 Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS65

One of the Very Finest Known

Production of double eagles declined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1879, with a reported mintage of 207,600 pieces. Many circulated survivors are available in today’s market, but Mint State coins are rare. And when it comes to choice uncirculated or better examples, we’re talking RARE! NGC and PCGS combined, have graded only 30 pieces MS63 or higher. Better yet, this is the sole MS65 graded by NGC, with just one higher and PCGS has graded a single MS65, with none higher. This one displays a sharp strike and satiny luster, which is much more pronounced in-hand.

1889 Morgan Dollar NGC MS67

A substantial mintage of 21.7 million Morgan dollars was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1889, making the issue readily available in lower Mint State grades. However, many examples seen were struck from overused dies and high-grade specimens with a sharp strike are not at all plentiful. At the MS67 grade level the 1889 is a prime condition rarity. In fact, this is one of only five so-graded at NGC, with none higher. This particular example is more vibrant and colorful, when viewed in-hand.

1876 Sailor Head Pattern Dollar High R.7 NGC PR67RB

Extremely Rare

Judd-1465, Pollock-1616. A bill was passed by the House of Representatives in 1876, providing for the resumption of silver dollar coinage on a large scale. In response, Chief Engraver William Barber prepared a series of patterns for the prospective coinage, featuring different versions of his beautiful “Sailor Head” design. On August 11, 1876, Superintendent Pollock sent a specimen of Judd-1465 to Mint Director Henry Linderman for consideration as a possible design for the silver dollar. Linderman was enthusiastic, saying, “…altogether this Head of Liberty may be regarded as equal if not superior to any heretofore prepared at the Mint.” The sponsoring bill was defeated in the Senate, and silver dollar coinage was delayed until 1878, when the famous Morgan dollar design made its debut. Judd-1465 is a very rare issue, as USPatterns.com lists just six coins on their roster of known specimens. This is the single highest graded example by either NGC or PCGS!

1842 Large Date Liberty Eagle NGC MS61

Scarce, Flashy Unc.

Although the Guide Book mintage for the Large Date variety is multiples of its Small Date counterpart, the two issues are similarly priced, and approximately equal in rarity. This is the only MS61 to be graded by NGC and just two have been graded higher. The one we offer here is – and we’re about to play our broken record, once more – is lighter, as well as more lustrous and attractive than seen in our lackluster images.
