A Very Old, but Unworn Lady

This issue is part of a very short lived series, often referred to as “Capped Bust Large Bust”, which ran only from 1807-1812. The example offered here is well struck and exhibits a pleasing tarnish-gold color. Considering that It would likely cost five figures to obtain a representative which grades just a single point higher, this grade seems like a nice entry point.

1871-CC Liberty Eagle NGC AU53

A Rare CC $10 Lib.

The Comstock Lode is famous for its vast yield of silver ore, yet gold was found in abundance as well. In 1871, a large amount of gold was taken from Comstock, although most of it went to the San Francisco Mint. Carson City received a mere 25% of the gold output. South America was the beneficiary of some 1871-CC eagles, although most of the 8,085-piece mintage circulated in local commerce. Few Mint State pieces were saved or otherwise preserved, with just three Uncirculated examples shown on the combined NGC and PCGS population reports.

1911 Indian Eagle NGC MS67

Superb

In Superb Gem condition, most Indian eagle issues are either unknown or prohibitively rare. Even plentiful type-coin issues such as the 1926 and 1932 are essentially uncollectible (or nearly so) in this condition. Among With Motto dates, the 1911 is one of only a handful that — although conditionally very rare — are still collectible in this top condition. We haven’t offered an NGC MS67 example at auction in nearly five years. This particular specimen displays lovely orange-gold color, a sharp strike and problem-free surfaces. The NGC population is 9 with 5 higher.

1895 Morgan Dollar NGC PR63

Long Live the “King”

Mint records indicate 880 proof Morgan dollars were struck in 1895, to accompany a tiny business-strike mintage of 12,000 pieces. Unfortunately, none of the regular-issue coins have ever surfaced in any collection, leaving collectors to wonder if the mintage figures represent some kind of accounting error, or if the coins were held in government storage until 1918 and melted under the provisions of the Pittman Act. In either case, date collectors have always relied on the small supply of proofs to fill this whole in their collections and the 1895 has often been called the “King of the Morgan dollars.” While not designated as a Cameo, this example displays some contrast, particularly on the reverse.

1909-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65+

This Saint is Tough!

The 1909-D Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a better date, due to its small mintage of 52,500 coins. The surviving population is estimated at roughly 1,200 coins, of which the finest pieces either came from South American holdings or were preserved by a few numismatists from the Mint Cashier. European coins were usually jostled in storage, making low grades the norm from that source. The NGC population is a mere 1 with 2 higher.
