The most prominent city in Ancient Greece militarily and economically, Athens had at its disposal an almost inexhaustible supply of silver from the mines it controlled at Laurion. This mine would be instrumental as Athenian influence increased in the region. To facilitate this expansion, a large supply of coinage was necessary, both for international economy and as a means of declaring Athems’ dominance in the region. The famous “owl” silver coinage was introduced around 520 BC, featuring the helmeted head of Athena, and on the reverse, the standing figure of an owl, her sacred bird. Over time, the design of the owls became more streamlined, culminating in the naturalistic style of the coins on offer here.

Struck around the time period of the Peloponnesian War (431 to 404 BC), these ancient trade coins formed the basis of the Greek economy in antiquity and circulated widely in the Mediterranean region and beyond. Athenian “owls” are a good candidate for being the most famous coins of antiquity, and provide a link to the history and style of the ancient world that is without parallel.

1851 “887” Reeded Edge Humbert $50 NGC MS61

Very Rare (and Heavy)

The importance of the 1851 $50 gold coins can scarcely be overemphasized. Ask any advanced collector of Territorial gold to name the most significant and memorable coinage design from the early California Gold Rush period, and the Humbert-U.S. Assay Office octagonal fifty dollars will likely be the first named. Until the commemorative Panama-Pacific fifty dollar pieces of 1915, the 1851-52 Humbert-Assay Office fifties remained the only large octagonal gold coins struck under the auspices of the United States Mint (the Assay Office was a provisional government mint), although later California private coiners struck round fifty dollar coins (Kellogg in 1854-55 and Wass, Molitor in 1855). The NGC population is only 8 with 12 higher.

1924-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65

Despite a large original mintage, the 1924-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is scarce in all grades in today’s market, and Gems are major rarities. Most of the mintage was melted after the Gold Recall of 1933, rendering the official production figures irrelevant. Fortunately for present-day collectors, a number of coins were discovered in European banks, beginning in the 1950s, causing this and many other Saint dates to become more available. On the other hand, when collectors seek an MS65 example, they find the situation has changed little from the early days of the 1940s. That is because coins found in European holdings were subjected to the rigors of transport and storage with other large gold coins and few escaped without significant surface marks. The NGC population is just 19 with 2 higher.

1910 Indian Quarter Eagle NGC MS66

The 1910 Indian quarter eagle is one of the better-struck issues in the early part of the series, frequently seen with rich luster and bold design elements. The challenge comes in finding an example with minimal abrasions, as the typical coin is affected by numerous faint ticks and surface grazes that limit the grade, as well as the eye appeal. This particular representative, therefore, will be a refreshing reward for the patient buyer. The NGC population is just 18 with none graded higher.

1907 High Relief Double Eagle NGC PR65+

No official records have surfaced to document the striking of Proof High Reliefs.  However, David Akers, and many other numismatists have gone on record as believing a small number were struck, and NGC has certified some with specific die characteristics, as proofs (PCGS does not recognize the existence of proof High Reliefs at this time). According to Scott Schechter/NGC: The coins exhibit crisp strikes and distinctive satin surfaces, with heavy, swirling die polish lines, and are struck from the earliest state of one specific die pair. The most easily recognized feature is the edge lettering, as all proofs were struck using the same collar used to strike the Ultra High Relief double eagles, with a raised collar-segment line between the S in PLURIBUS and a star.
