The San Francisco Mint continued to be the chief producer of double eagles in 1879, striking more than 1.2 million coins (about 1 million pieces more than all three other mints combined). However, Uncirculated examples are seldom offered finer than MS61 and are decidedly rare finer than MS62. If you’re looking for one of those MS62’s you should know that it’s likely to cost more than three times the amount of these MS61’s. The 1911-D is the first of only three branch mint issues in the Indian quarter eagle series and it claims a mintage of just 55,680 pieces, a remarkably small production total for any 20th century coin. Accordingly, this issue is the rarest Indian quarter eagle and the acknowledged key to the series. Most examples seen are in lower Mint State grades. After almost half a century without expansion, the U.S. Mint established three branches that began operations in 1838: Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Of the three, only New Orleans struck silver coinage in addition to gold. Only 404,034 representatives were struck. As the first dime issue produced at the New Orleans Mint, this issue is also popular as a two-year No Stars type. In Mint State this date is scarcely seen, and Gem-quality pieces are nothing short of rare. The NGC population is a mere 4 with 2 higher. The 1909-O half eagle is distinctive in several ways: it is the final gold issue produced at the New Orleans Mint, it is the sole O-mint Indian Head type coin, and it has the lowest circulation-strike mintage (34,200 pieces) of any date in the Indian half eagle series with a proportionately low survival rate in high grade. About Uncirculated examples are scarce, and Mint State representative through MS62 are extremely challenging. Pieces grading finer than this are genuine rarities, and Gem-quality coins are virtually uncollectible. The NGC population stands at just 26 with 17 higher.
