1851 “887” Reeded Edge Humbert $50 NGC MS61

Very Rare (and Heavy)

The importance of the 1851 $50 gold coins can scarcely be overemphasized. Ask any advanced collector of Territorial gold to name the most significant and memorable coinage design from the early California Gold Rush period, and the Humbert-U.S. Assay Office octagonal fifty dollars will likely be the first named. Until the commemorative Panama-Pacific fifty dollar pieces of 1915, the 1851-52 Humbert-Assay Office fifties remained the only large octagonal gold coins struck under the auspices of the United States Mint (the Assay Office was a provisional government mint), although later California private coiners struck round fifty dollar coins (Kellogg in 1854-55 and Wass, Molitor in 1855). The NGC population is only 8 with 12 higher.

1879 Morgan Dollar PCGS MS67

Tied for Highest Graded

Offered here is a frosty, white example with exemplary surfaces and a great overall appearance. Not particularly tough to come by through the MS66 grade level, but very rarely seen in this state of preservation. The last PCGS representative we auctioned was all the way back in 2007! Tied with 7 others for the highest graded by PCGS.

1924-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65

Major Rarity

Despite a large original mintage, the 1924-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is scarce in all grades in today’s market, and Gems are major rarities. Most of the mintage was melted after the Gold Recall of 1933, rendering the official production figures irrelevant. Fortunately for present-day collectors, a number of coins were discovered in European banks, beginning in the 1950s, causing this and many other Saint dates to become more available. On the other hand, when collectors seek an MS65 example, they find the situation has changed little from the early days of the 1940s. That is because coins found in European holdings were subjected to the rigors of transport and storage with other large gold coins and few escaped without significant surface marks. The NGC population is just 19 with 2 higher.

1878-CC Liberty Eagle NGC XF40

Rare $10 from Carson City

While Philadelphia and San Francisco saw ten-dollar gold coinage production surge in 1878, the opposite happened in Carson City. There,  output instead, slipped to just 3,244 pieces. Over the past 20 years or so, the number thought to be extant has risen slightly from an estimated 45 to 55 pieces, to a higher number of 60 to 75 coins. Heritage has auctioned just a single (PCGS) XF40 example in the past ten years.

1829 Curl Base 2 Capped Bust Dime PCGS/CAC F12

Highly Collectible

The Curl Base 2 date on this obverse die is paired with a Small 10C reverse to create the only variety of the date style, a major Guide Book variety with perhaps only a few dozen pieces in existence. When examples appear for sale in major auctions, and that happens only infrequently, the grade is typically low, usually only Good or VG. The PCGS population is a mere 2 with 5 higher, with none better than VF!
