The 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagle is avidly collected by series specialists and pattern collectors alike as the only available issue that shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for the ten dollar gold piece. It is listed as Judd-1901 in the current pattern reference, but most numismatists now believe these coins should be considered business strikes. Initially, 542 examples of the design were struck, but only 472 specimens were ever distributed. The remaining 70 coins were melted after 1915. The design exemplifies the style of Saint-Gaudens, sculpted in high relief, with concave fields that slope up directly into the edge of the coin. The financial stresses and uncertainties of the Civil War caused widespread hoarding of all precious metal coinage during the war years. The U.S. government suspended specie payments in 1861, so gold coins did not circulate at par and there was limited demand for the three dollar gold piece in the national economy. Accordingly, only 5,000 three dollar gold pieces were struck in 1863, all delivered in one batch on November 21. Relatively few examples were saved and as might be expected, the 1863 three dollar gold piece is an elusive issue in all grades today. The PCGS population stands at 16 with 26 higher.

The 1911 claims one of the few mintages of less than 200,000 coins, but the story of its availability is similar to that of other issues in the series. Most examples were exported to European markets, either directly from New York to London or through Ottawa, Canada. Those pieces that avoided melting overseas were subjected to rough handling, explaining why nearly all 1911 double eagles are found in MS64 or lower condition. Gems such as this, are scarce. The 1914-D Lincoln cent is a key issue in the series, from a low mintage of 1.1 million pieces. Unfortunately, despite the low mintage figure, the 1914-D was largely overlooked by contemporary collectors and few high-quality examples were saved at the time of issue. The date became better known and highly sought-after in the 1930s, with the advent of coin albums and the Standard Catalog. By then, most examples had circulated extensively and few would grade better than Fine-Very Fine by today’s standards. The PCGS population is 65 with 17 higher (with 10 of those 17 being 65+ pieces). While the population might not be extremely low in terms of absolute numbers, it’s small when you consider the vast number of Lincoln Cent collectors. Listed at $15,000 in the PCGS price guide.

The 1907 High Relief Double Eagle is one of the most popular coins ever struck by the United States Mint. The coins are sculptural in appearance and are considered by many to be the most beautiful regular issue gold coin ever produced.
Unfortunately, the design was also impractical and redesigned by Charles Barber later in the year. The date is given in Roman numerals (the coins nickname by some) and lacks the Motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. President Roosevelt believed that money could easily be used for ungodly pursuits such as gambling and thus the name of the Lord should not be used on coinage.
The 1907 High Relief is categorized by most as either Wire Rim or Flat Rim. The coins are identical except for raised metal around the rims. This is probably the result of some tinkering by the Mint while they struggled to produce coins with such extreme relief.
Around the late 1960s or early 1970s experts began to describe certain 1907 High Relief Double Eagles as Proof. These coins are certainly different, but not exactly like the latter Proof Double Eagles of the series. There are no mintage figures and the origins of the coins are a mystery. The coins have deep swirling die lines and exhibit a satiny surface similar to the Roman finish Proof gold coins. A fairly large number exist and it is my opinion that they are the result of experimentation with the new design by Mint employees.
Many, if not the great majority of the original mintage was saved when the 1907 High Reliefs were issued. Thousands still exist and most seen are in some form of Mint State. Gem examples can easily be purchased if budget permits. A few nearly flawless examples are known. The finest High Relief graded by NGC is a PR 69 that sold for $534,000 in 2005.

Of the 1,105 gold dollar proofs struck in 1885, PCGS has certified a total of 107 submissions. That figure comprises all designations and almost certainly includes duplications. From among those 107 submissions, only 14 have received a Deep Cameo designation. Few match or exceed the quality of this outstanding Gem. The majority of known examples do not display any degree of cameo contrast, highlighting the utmost rarity of this offering. A thick coating of frost covers fully struck motifs, allowing for the appreciation of the bold contrast produced against the deeply reflective, glassy mirrors of this stunning representative. Opportunities to acquire a Deep Cameo example of the 1885 are extremely rare and not to be passed up. The PCGS population is just three with only two (PR67+’s) higher.

First year of issue for the popular St. Gaudens $10 Indian design. A super lustrous, well struck example, sure to elicit strong collector or dealer interest. This 1907 type with No Periods is fairly common in low grade, but robust demand exists for high end specimens such as this one.
From an original mintage of 239,406, there are only 62 graded finer by PCGS and NGC combined.

At 208,000 pieces, the mintage of the 1921-D Walking Liberty half dollar is the lowest in the series. This issue is also the second-rarest date in the series in high grade Uncirculated, with only the 1921-S being seen less often. The popularity of the Walking Liberty half dollar series is due to a combination of the attractive design as well as the relative availability of every issue therein. That said, the key dates of 1921 are only readily available in low circulated grades. Collectors seeking a complete set will encounter a roadblock with the 1921 issues, particularly those of the branch mints.
