1852 Assay (887 Thous.) $50 PCGS AU53

Flashy, Eye-Appealing

Struck in .887 fineness under the authority of the United States Assay Office of Gold, Augustus Humbert assayer, the 1852 octagonal fifty dollar slugs are perhaps the most recognized numismatic artifacts of the historic Gold Rush era. The Reeded Edge fifties of this period were much easier to produce than the older Lettered Edge Humbert pieces. Accordingly, they were struck in large numbers and widely accepted throughout the region and in overseas trade. Easily recognized in their day, most examples were later turned in and melted for recoinage at the San Francisco Mint when that facility opened in 1854. The PCGS population stands at 13 with 15 higher. While not apparent in our images, this example is particularly flashy, due to lustrous, semi-prooflike obverse

First Year 1907 No Motto Indian Eagles PCGS AU58 & PCGS MS61

A Special Offering

Saint-Gaudens’ initial design for the Indian eagle did not include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, but the inscription was added in 1908, creating a popular two-year design type. The 1907 issue is the go-to No Motto type-coin for many collectors. And that makes perfect sense, as it’s a first- year-of-issue of a two-year type. We have the following available for sale:

PCGS AU-58 (20 coins available) Offered at $1,195/each

PCGS MS-61 (18 coins available) Offered at $1,265/each

1876-CC Liberty Eagle PCGS AU50

Lustrous CC $10 Rarity

Annual gold eagle coinage at the Carson City Mint breached the five-figure barrier (and barely) only four times prior to the 1885 to 1889 hiatus during which the mint was shut down. Double eagles dominated large denomination gold production from the Comstock Lode-fed branch mint during this period. In 1876, only 4,696 tens were struck. This issue circulated extensively and is unknown in Mint State today. The PCGS population is just 11 with 12 higher. In hand, this example is lighter and brighter, as well as more lustrous and attractive than seen in our images.

1854 Large Date Liberty Double Eagle PCGS/CAC AU58

Large One (Date)

Much scarcer than its Small Date counterpart, the Large Date 1854 double eagle continues to gain popularity among collectors as one of the premier Type One varieties in the series. It is a considerable condition rarity as well as an absolutely scarce variety, represented by only a small fraction of the total 1854 mintage of 757,899 pieces. This particular example exhibits an especially wholesome appearance. The PCGS population is just 15 with 8 higher.

Overdate 1853/2 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS60

Rare Unc.

While the status of the 1853/2 remains controversial, collectors flock to the variety as the only potential overdate of the series. An anomaly in the lower loop of 3 gets most of the attention, and re-punching above the base of 1 is clearly present. A squarish die lump beneath R in LIBERTY is diagnostic of the variety. The PCGS population is just 3 with 11 higher, the latter figure being comprised solely of MS61 grade examples.
