1880 Trade Dollar NGC PR67

No Trade dollars were produced for circulation after 1878, but the Philadelphia Mint continued to strike proofs for collectors until 1884. When collectors and dealers became aware of the proof-only status of the denomination a popular speculation in the proofs sprang up. The increased demand resulted in a record mintage of 1,987 proof Trade dollars in 1880. Although the speculation peaked in March, and subsided after that, the Mint continued to strike proofs throughout the year. Looking and this coin in hand and comparing it to our images, we must say – a picture isn’t always worth 1000 words. In actuality, this example boasts light to medium pink and golden centers encircled by luscious violet and blue-green borders. Said differently, ignore the pictures! No non-CAM/UCAM’s have been graded higher by NGC.

1907 High Relief Double Eagle NGC PR65+

No official records have surfaced to document the striking of Proof High Reliefs.  However, David Akers, and many other numismatists have gone on record as believing a small number were struck, and NGC has certified some with specific die characteristics, as proofs (PCGS does not recognize the existence of proof High Reliefs at this time). According to Scott Schechter/NGC: The coins exhibit crisp strikes and distinctive satin surfaces, with heavy, swirling die polish lines, and are struck from the earliest state of one specific die pair. The most easily recognized feature is the edge lettering, as all proofs were struck using the same collar used to strike the Ultra High Relief double eagles, with a raised collar-segment line between the S in PLURIBUS and a star.

1907 Liberty Quarter Eagle PCGS PR66 CAM

The Mint struck 154 proof quarter eagles in 1907, marking the end of the Liberty Head type. About two thirds of these exist today, and many in remarkable states of preservation. The end of the type may have prompted more examples to be preserved than in other years, but the unappealing matte proofs of the following year likely also spurred collectors to more carefully preserve the last of the brilliant mirror proofs.

This coin serves as a good example that the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words” is not always true. In this particular instance, the coin is more yellow-gold (as opposed to orange-gold) than shows in our images. In addition to that, if you tilt it even slightly, you will see considerably more obverse frost and contrast than is apparent in our photo. Said differently, this example is absolutely stunning! The PCGS population is 9 with 9 higher.

1856 Flying Eagle Cent PCGS PR65

Let’s Go Flying

The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was originally issued as a pattern, to demonstrate the new small-size copper-nickel design. Large numbers were struck to showcase the design to Congressmen and other VIPs, in both proof and business-strike format. Most of the proofs were from the Snow-9 dies, characterized by a center dot under the upper-left serif of the N in CENTS. The issue has always been collected by Flying Eagle-Indian cent specialists and pattern collectors alike. Only seven have been graded higher by PCGS.

Ultra Rare, Stunning 1884 Liberty Eagle NGC PR66 Ultra Cameo

Only 45 proof Liberty eagles were struck in 1884, the lowest production total for any gold denomination that year. Thirty pieces were delivered for inclusion in the proof sets on January 19, with another 15 coins delivered at intervals throughout the year. The proof sets were almost all broken up in the early-mid 20th century, due to pressure from date collectors seeking an example of the double eagle, which was a proof-only issue. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population of the proof eagle at 16-20 examples in all grades. This is a spectacular looking example with extraordinary eye appeal. Unpriced in both the NGC and PCGS price guides in this grade and designation. It is tied with one other for highest graded by NGC, while PCGS hasn’t graded a Deep Cameo higher than PR65.
