The Trade dollar represented the first substantial silver dollar mintage at the Carson City Mint since its opening in 1870. The 1873-CC, struck to the extent of 124,500 coins, eclipsed the mintages of all four Seated dollars from this mint combined by more than 100,000 pieces. Nevertheless, this was the second-lowest production total from Carson City for the Trade dollar series, trailing only the 1878-CC (97,000 coins). This coin is considerably more lustrous, as well as more colorful in hand. Tied with seven others at this grade level with just a single example graded higher.

John Grover Kellogg was one of the most respected assayers and coiners in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. He was involved in many of the preeminent refining operations of the period, partnering with the likes of John Moffat, G.F. Richter, and Augustus Humbert from 1849 through 1860. In 1854, these twenty dollar gold pieces served a vital role in commerce during the time between the closure of the United State Assay Office and the full operation of the San Francisco Mint, which opened in April of that year. As is the case with many of our offerings, this coin is somewhat lighter and brighter than seen in our images. The NGC population is just 9 with 17 graded higher.

This incredible proof is pedigreed to the John Jay Pittman Collection, where it was part of Pittman’s “Complete 1845 Proof Set in Original Case.” In his discussion of this coin, David Akers wrote:
“This proof silver dollar is essentially perfect and is unquestionably the finest proof dollar of the decade that I have ever seen. It is fully struck with a sharp square edge and deep mirror fields that are immaculate and pristine. The few lines present in the fields are actually planchet lines that were not eliminated by the minting process; they are not hairlines. The toning is as extraordinary and perfect as the technical quality of the surfaces, a superb medium multicolored iridescent blend of reddish-gold, which is the predominant color, and considerate violet and blue. Every star is boldly defined with all of its radial lines, and the head and foot of Liberty are extremely sharp. All of the eagle’s features and talons are also fully struck.”
It’s estimated that there are approximately 15 Proof examples known. This is the only PR67 graded by NGC with none higher and PCGS hasn’t graded any higher than PR65.

Only San Francisco produced double eagles in 1916. Almost the entire mintage was initially put into storage, but quantities were later exported for trade, mainly to South America and Asia. In 1916, the United States exported more than $100 million worth of gold coin. Today, the 1916-S double eagle is moderately elusive in MS66 condition, and NGC lists only four MS66+ examples (including this one) with just 3 graded higher.

When one just looks at the mintage of 73,700 pieces, the 1878 would appear to be moderately scarce but nothing would tip off the collector to just how rare it actually is in high grades. Our records show merely six MS64 appearances for the 1878 eagle in the past 10 years, attesting to the issue’s extreme rarity at this grade level. Both the NGC and PCGS population reports show just a single MS65 example with none graded higher.

No half eagles were struck between 1916 and 1929, but the Philadelphia Mint produced a total of 662,000 coins in the later year. Unfortunately, the effects of the Great Depression were beginning to be felt and there was little need for the coins in the shrinking economy. Most of the mintage was held in government storage and later destroyed after 1933. No half eagles were struck in later years and the 1929 is a key date in the series today. Although our reverse image makes that side of the coin appear to be dark, you’re seeing the effect of the angle and lighting – the true color is actually quite similar to that of the obverse. The 1860-S Type One Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 544,950 pieces, a substantial production total in absolute terms, but slightly smaller than average for a San Francisco issue from this period. The coins were released into the channels of commerce, where they circulated heavily for many years, suffering the usual wear and attrition along the way. Few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary numismatists and the issue is rare in Mint State grades today. The current PCGS population is 16 with 12 higher. Washington — The United States Mint will release the second coin in its Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Platinum Proof Coin Series today at noon EST. Launched in 2018, this three-year platinum Proof coin series features all new obverse (heads) designs created concurrently by one designer and a new common reverse (tails) design. The price of the coin on the Mint’s website is currently $1,220.

The obverse (heads) of the 2019 “Liberty” version of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence platinum Proof coin (product code 19EJ) portrays Lady Liberty keeping watch over prairies, lakes, and mountains as pioneers head westward. The wild terrain in the background evokes the quintessential American spirit to explore new territory and the freedom to pursue new landscapes, ideas, and ways of life. In the foreground, Lady Liberty’s lips are parted, symbolizing freedom of speech. Her torch is an emblem of the guiding light that liberty provides, while the open book represents the rule of law and its equal application. Inscriptions are E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2019.
Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer Justin Kunz created all obverse designs in this series. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna sculpted the 2019 design.
The reverse (tails) design of all coins in this series depicts an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, $100, 1 OZ., and .9995 PLATINUM. AIP designer Patricia Lucas-Morris created the design, which former Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart sculpted.
The 2019 Preamble to the Declaration of Independence platinum Proof coin carries the West Point mint mark. This exquisite coin is packaged in a black velvet, satin-lined presentation case that is enclosed in an outer box and sleeve. The Mint’s certificate of authenticity is included.

Mintage for the 2019 coin is capped at 15,000 units. The Mint has limited orders to one coin per household for the first 24 hours of sales, after which the Mint will lift the limit. This product will not be available via the bulk purchase program on the launch date.
If customers want to collect all three, the 2018 platinum Proof coins are still available while supplies last. Customers should look for the final coin in this series in 2020.
