1871-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS63

Positively Pleasing

The San Francisco Mint was the premier agency producing double eagles throughout the Type Two design from 1866 to 1876. In 1871, the California facility struck 928,000 double eagles, and more than 3,000 of those coins have been graded by NGC and PCGS. Of that population, less than one-tenth have earned a Mint State designation, and almost all such coins are heavily abraded; pieces grading finer than MS62 are extremely rare, as evidenced by the NGC population of 7 with 1 higher. In hand, this coin’s color is more yellow-gold, as opposed to the reddish-gold seen in our images.

1896-S Barber Quarter NGC MS65*

Barber Quarter “Star”

Along with the rare 1901-S and 1913-S issues, the 1896-S quarter is unquestionably one of the top three rarities in the Barber quarter series. Just 188,039 pieces were struck. As usual, die clashing is visible within Liberty’s ear, a peculiar attribute of genuine 1896-S quarters and a quick way to help verify authenticity. The vibrantly lustrous surfaces display lovely border toning in shades of electric-blue, violet, and russet-brown. Meanwhile, ivory-gold shades at the centers resonate with silver luster. In hand, this gem is lighter, as well as more lustrous and eye-appealing than seen in our images. Including this star-designated example, the NGC population is only 7 with 2 higher.

1868-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62

Only Two Graded Higher

Although more than 800,000 double eagles were struck at San Francisco in 1868, few pieces survive in Mint State. In fact, examples are scarce in MS60 and MS61, and anything finer is a major rarity. The PCGS population is a mere 8 with 2 higher, each of the latter being MS62+ examples.

1866-S Motto Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS61

“Motto” for Today is…

This is the first San Francisco Type Two double eagle issue. Although struck in large quantity (842,250 pieces), the mintage circulated heavily in the West and precious few Uncirculated pieces have surfaced in the past 150+ years. Among the small number of Mint State survivors, none have graded MS63 or better at either PCGS or NGC. The PCGS population currently stands at 19 with 8 higher.

1857-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS66

(Not SOS, but) SS Central America

Despite a mintage of 970,500 pieces, this was a rare issue in high grade before the advent of modern shipwreck finds. Like most Type One double eagles, the 1857-S was not difficult to locate in circulated grades, but Mint State specimens were extremely rare before thousands of high quality coins were salvaged from the wreck of the S.S. Central America. That famous shipwreck find made high grade Type One double eagles available to collectors for the first time. As Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note, it “changed the landscape of collecting double eagles profoundly.” Seemingly always popular and in demand.
