Four (Rare Ones) Of A Kind

The effects of the Panic of 1893 included the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, ending the massive mandated coinage of Morgan dollars the U.S. Mint was required to produce every year. Morgan dollar mintages were drastically reduced at all U.S. Mints in 1893, and the San Francisco Mint produced a series low business-strike mintage of just 100,000 pieces. Most of the small mintage was either widely circulated or melted in 1918, under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Accordingly, the 1893-S is the most elusive Morgan dollar in today’s market.

1928-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS65

Rare Gem

Although the 1928 Peace dollar is the low-mintage key date of the series, the 1928-S is a much more significant condition key. In MS65, the San Francisco issue is many times rarer than its Philadelphia counterpart, despite having a mintage that exceeds 1.6 million coins. Only 5 have been graded higher by PCGS with 4 of them being MS65+ examples. The one offered here is lustrous and lightly toned, with a pleasing overall appearance.

1866-S No Motto Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS60

The Act of March 3, 1865 specified in part, that the motto should be included on all gold coins larger than the three dollar piece. Reverse dies for the $20’s were  prepared, containing the new motto at the Philadelphia Mint, but didn’t reach the S.F. Mint until at least March of 1866. Anxious to begin coinage, the Mint began production, using two of the old reverse dies without the motto. In a scenario reminiscent of the earlier 1861-S Paquet Reverse coins, an estimated  120,000 No Motto double eagles were produced and released into circulation before the new dies arrived. Collecting $20’s only became popular in this country in the late 1930s, after President Roosevelt’s Gold Recall of 1933 made it illegal for U.S. citizens to own large amounts of gold in other forms. By then, the 1866-S No Motto twenties had been circulating for decades, and attrition had taken a severe toll. Today, the issue is scarce-to-rare in all grades. The PCGS population is a mere 2 with 5 higher – none finer than MS62.

1907-S Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS65

Rare Gem, Last-Year-Of-Issue

This San Francisco issue is a significant condition rarity in the Liberty Head series. Although more than 2.1 million pieces were minted, fewer than 40 survivors are certified in Gem condition, between NGC and PCGS, combined. As a final-year issue in the Liberty Head series, it’s possible the San Francisco Mint turned its attentions elsewhere and used little care in releasing the freshly minted coins into commerce or storage. Regardless of the reason, most survivors are heavily bag-marked. The NGC population is only 19 with none higher. Listed at $20,000 in the CDN CPG and $21,000 in the NGC price guide.

1892-S Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Very Rare, Gem

Large numbers of 1892-S double eagles were shipped from San Francisco to overseas destinations to settle large accounts in foreign trade during this era. In recent times, many of those coins have been repatriated to this country in response to ever-increasing collector demand. However, most of those specimens show signs of rough shipping and storage. Today, this issue can be easily located in lower Mint State grades, bur examples in MS65 condition are rare, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable. The PCGS population is just 19 with 5 (MS65+ examples) graded higher.
