Rare S-Mint $20 Lib

The San Francisco Mint struck large numbers of double eagles throughout the second half of the 19th century and 1877 was certainly no exception. However, the coins were released into circulation at, or near, the time of issue. They were used to settle large accounts in both foreign and domestic trade, and few high-quality examples were saved for numismatic purposes. Accordingly, most examples seen today are heavily bag-marked specimens recovered from European holdings or worn circulated pieces that fulfilled their intended function in the hard money economy of the Western United States. The 1877-S is a rare issue at the MS63 grade level, and finer coins are very rare. The PCGS population is just 32 with 7 higher.

Tied for Highest Graded 

The 1903-S is a plentiful and largely unheralded issue, that only begins to command a real numismatic premium at the near-Gem grade level. This is one of only 18 to have received this grade from PCGS with none higher. The example offered here exhibits a very bold strike, satiny surfaces and pleasing orange-gold color.

1915-S Pan Pac $50 Round NGC MS64

The Panama-Pacific Exposition was authorized to sell up to 1,500 examples each of both the Round and Octagonal versions of the Pan-Pac fifties, and the Mint struck 1510 examples of the Round version, including 10 examples for the Assay Commission. Unfortunately, the high cost of the coins ($100 per coin) discouraged all but the most dedicated collectors, and only 483 specimens of the Round design were sold. The remaining 1,017 coins were melted after the close of the exposition. These rare gold commemoratives are avidly sought-after in today’s market. If you’ve never held one of these massive and extremely impressive coins in your hand, you owe it to yourself to do so.

1883-S Morgan Dollar PCGS MS65

Not Your Everyday S-Mint Morgan

Although heavily touted as a conditionally scarce date in Mint State, the 1883-S Morgan remains collectible in grades through MS64, and is frequently offered at auction in this range. It is the Gem grade level from where this issue draws its fame. In MS65, the 1883-S Morgan is a grand rarity in absolute numbers, and in the context of the series, is prohibitively rare. This particular example is sharp, flashy and virtually white, with considerable eye-appeal. The PCGS population is just 21 with 5 higher.

Spectacular, 1 of Only 5

This example exceeds the quality of almost all other PL 1881-S dollars. There are some splashes of delicate golden toning (which are far more subtle than seen in our images) around the borders, but most of each side is brilliant. The reflectivity of the fields is captivating, but the true hallmark of this coin is its state of preservation. Liberty’s cheek is essentially flawless. If you like it, based on our pictures, you will love it in hand. Tied with four others for the highest graded by PCGS.
