1928 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS67

Superb, Satiny Saint

As the last date in the Saint-Gaudens series that is generally available in high grade, the 1928 double eagle is frequently tapped for type purposes. This issue is also often well struck, and high-grade examples sometimes exhibit eye appeal that rivals that of many 1923-D coins. Such is the case with this Superb Gem example. Only two have been graded higher by NGC, each of them, MS67+.

1925 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS/CAC MS66+

Highest Graded 1925 DDR

Close examination reveals slight reverse doubling along the lower edge of the eagle and among letters of the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. Die doubling of similar strength in a 20th century copper, nickel, or silver series might secure a Guide Book listing, but double eagles are currently collected principally by type or issue.

1914 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65+

One of the Very Finest

The 1914 is a relatively low-mintage issue, boasting a production total of only 95,250 coins. These were produced chiefly for the purpose of backing gold certificates being issued for circulation. Most surviving coins, repatriated from overseas, are extensively bag-marked from repeated moving and jostling in bags. In Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles, Roger Burdette reasons that most of the high-grade survivors known today came from the same few bags that received less movement throughout their life. A few high-grade pieces may also trace their origins to collectors who acquired them directly from the Mint Cashier in the United States. The one offered here boasts clean surfaces with a satin-like texture. Only 8 have been graded higher by PCGS.

1924-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65

Major Rarity

Despite a large original mintage, the 1924-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is scarce in all grades in today’s market, and Gems are major rarities. Most of the mintage was melted after the Gold Recall of 1933, rendering the official production figures irrelevant. Fortunately for present-day collectors, a number of coins were discovered in European banks, beginning in the 1950s, causing this and many other Saint dates to become more available. On the other hand, when collectors seek an MS65 example, they find the situation has changed little from the early days of the 1940s. That is because coins found in European holdings were subjected to the rigors of transport and storage with other large gold coins and few escaped without significant surface marks. The NGC population is just 19 with 2 higher.
