1839 Type of 1840 Liberty Eagle PCGS XF45

In his 1998 sale of the John Jay Pittman Collection, Part II, David Akers presented the following remarks on the 1839 Head of 1840 eagle: “The 1839 Type of 1840 issue is one of the greatest rarities among all Liberty Head eagles, especially in high grade. It is also far more rare that the 1839 Type of 1838 or even the 1838, both of which have traditionally been more highly prized due to their type coin status.” Today, only 50 to 60 examples are believed extant, with just three or four in Mint State. The example offered here is noticeably lighter and more lustrous than seen in our images. The PCGS population is 5 with 16 graded higher.

1873 (Closed 3) Liberty Eagle NGC AU53

Very Rare

The 1873 Closed 3 (old name) or Close 3 (current nomenclature) coins were struck early in the year and the date logotype for all denominations was modified following complaints that the digit looked like an 8. Among Liberty eagles, the entire 800-coin mintage for the year was produced in January 1873, and none were minted with the modified Open 3 date style. Proof coins were preferred over Mint State coins in the 19th century, so no circulation strikes were saved at the time of issue, despite the low mintage. As a result, high grade survivors are non-existent. The NGC population is only 2 with 9 higher, none better than AU58.

1909-D Indian Eagle PCGS MS66

One of the Finest Survivors

Ex O’neal. The 1909-D is one of the scarcer issues among early ten-dollar Indians, and is much more challenging than its mintage of 121,540 pieces would seem to indicate. David Akers contends in A Handbook of 20th-Century United States Gold Coins that it is one of the most underrated issues in the series, and is actually one of the rarest in an absolute sense. “Even in MS60 this issue is very rare and in MS63 or MS64 condition, it can be located only with great difficulty,” says Akers. The PCGS population is only 4 with 2 higher.

1913-S Indian Eagle NGC MS64+ CAC

San Fran $10 Indian Rarity

The 1913-S Indian eagle claims a low production total of 66,000 pieces and few high-quality specimens were saved by contemporary collectors. Most of the coins were released into circulation at the time of issue, where they circulated heavily in both domestic and foreign trade. As a result, most examples seen today are in circulated grades, in the VF-AU grade range. In his Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century, Mike Fuljenz notes: “The 1913-S Eagle is regarded as one of the great condition rarities in all of the 20th century U.S. gold series. It is moderately scarce even in circulated grades and the small numbers of Uncirculated pieces that exist consist mainly of MS60 to MS62 pieces. Only three examples have been graded higher by NGC. In MS63, this date is rare and it is very rare in MS64.”

1852-O Liberty Eagle PCGS AU58

With their energies directed mostly toward the production of double eagles, New Orleans Mint officials struck a paltry 18,000 ten-dollar gold coins in 1852. In 2006, Doug Winter, who called this issue “one of the rarest No Motto eagles,” estimated 80 to 90 coins survived in all, including two to four Uncirculated coins. Today, NGC shows two in Mint State (one in MS60 and one in MS61) on their population report, while PCGS shows one in MS60, with none higher. The PCGS population is only 4 with 3 higher (two AU58+’s and the aforementioned MS60).
