1903 Liberty Eagle NGC MS66

Single Highest Graded by NGC

The 1903 Liberty eagle is a great condition rarity in MS66, somewhat surprising considering the mintage was 125,800 pieces and it is frequently encountered in lower grades. There is only one other MS66 certified — a PCGS coin (which auctioned in 2012 for $22,325). The strike is sharply detailed throughout, and the frosty lemony-gold surfaces are nearly perfect, aside from a lone mark behind Liberty’s eye that determines pedigree.

1878 Liberty Eagle NGC MS65

The Highest Graded at NGC

When one just looks at the mintage of 73,700 pieces, the 1878 would appear to be moderately scarce but nothing would tip off the collector to just how rare it actually is in high grades. Our records show merely six MS64 appearances for the 1878 eagle in the past 10 years, attesting to the issue’s extreme rarity at this grade level. Both the NGC and PCGS population reports show just a single MS65 example with none graded higher.

1799 Draped Bust Eagle PCGS MS63

Gorgeous for her Age

Large Stars Obverse variety. The early Philadelphia Mint was concerned about the numbers of coins struck and the serviceability of the dies required for their production, and not at all about the particular date those dies bore (or in some extreme cases, even the design). While the first few eagle emissions, from the 1795 Small Eagle through the 1798 Large Eagle, are each known from at least one to at most five die marriages per year, the 1799 eagle, all struck with the Large Eagle or Heraldic Eagle reverse, were produced in 10 different die pairings known to collectors today.

1881-O Liberty Eagle NGC MS61

Tied for Highest Graded

The 1881-O is the rarest New Orleans Mint eagle from the early part of this decade. Coins graded AU55 to AU58 are very rare, and there are only a small number of Mint State examples known. In 2006, Winter reported probably four of five Uncirculated pieces extant, a number that likely hasn’t changed appreciably, despite inflated certification totals. This one is semi-prooflike and quite flashy in its appearance. Tied with 7 others for the highest graded by NGC.

1882-O Liberty Eagle NGC MS61

No Saint, But a Tough N.O. $10 Lib

The 1882-O eagle is an elusive issue from a small mintage of 10,820 coins. The average survivor grades AU50. Rarely encountered in Mint State, with fewer than 40 pieces certified MS60 to MS63 at PCGS and NGC combined. This particular example is particularly flashy with semi-prooflike surfaces and a bold strike. Listed at $12,100 in the CDN CPG and $11,800 in the NGC price guide.
