1909 Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Pleasing to the Eye

Among Indian eagles from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1909 issue is one of the most challenging to locate in high grade. From a business-strike mintage of 184,789 pieces, most of the coins were either released into circulation, where they suffered the usual wear and attrition, or were held in government storage until they were melted in the 1930s. Today, the 1909 Indian ten dollar is rare in MS65 condition, and finer coins are even more elusive. The PCGS population report is 18 with 15 higher.

1908 No Motto Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Satiny Gem

The design of the Indian eagle was modified to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in 1908. The Philadelphia Mint only produced 33,500 No Motto ten dollar gold pieces before switching to the new type. Despite the limited production figure, the 1908 No Motto is not too difficult to locate in lower Uncirculated grades, but examples in MS65 condition are rare.

1909-O Indian Half Eagle PCGS MS61

Very Rare Key

The 1909-O half eagle is distinctive in several ways: it is the final gold issue produced at the New Orleans Mint, it is the sole O-mint Indian Head type coin, and it has the lowest circulation-strike mintage (34,200 pieces) of any date in the Indian half eagle series with a proportionately low survival rate in high grade. About Uncirculated examples are scarce, and Mint State representative through MS62 are extremely challenging. Pieces grading finer than this are genuine rarities, and Gem-quality coins are virtually un-collectible.

1907 Wire Rim Indian Eagle PCGS MS65

Beautiful and Vibrant

The 1907 Wire Rim Indian eagle is avidly collected by series specialists and pattern collectors alike as the only available issue that shows Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for the ten dollar gold piece. It is listed as Judd-1901 in the current pattern reference, but most numismatists now believe these coins should be considered business strikes. Initially, 542 examples of the design were struck, but only 472 specimens were ever distributed. The remaining 70 coins were melted after 1915. The design exemplifies the style of Saint-Gaudens, sculpted in high relief, with concave fields that slope up directly into the edge of the coin. As compared to our images, the coin is much lighter, brighter and more appealing in hand. Listed at $84,500 in the PCGS price guide.
