Shockingly Nice Top Pop Rarity

The first issue of Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design, appearing in 1839, is regarded among specialists as a distinct one-year type. The entire obverse portrait is a little more graceful-appearing than on subsequent issues which show a modified bust, with the chief difference being seen in the curvature of Liberty’s neck truncation; it is much more pronounced on the 1839 than on later dates. Mint State survivors are rare in any grade, with a handful of MS64 coins being the finest known. In fact, this is one of only three PCGS MS64’s with none higher!

1875-S/CC Trade Dollar NGC MS64

Scarce, Glistening “Trade”

Type One Reverse. Many collectors are unaware there are two varieties of S/CC Trade dollars from 1875. This is the more frequently encountered one and the variant that is much easier to see with the second C widely spaced from the S. Most collectors opt for this variant for the very reason of its visibility, not to mention the extreme rarity of the other variety and need for a high-powered loupe. After the S/CC was first discovered in 1965 it was quickly noticed just how scarce it was in better grades. It is much scarcer than the 1875 S-mint or the CC-mint, especially in strictly Uncirculated condition. In hand, this specimen exhibits obvious cartwheel luster on each side. Tied with one other for highest graded by NGC.

1907 Flat Edge High Relief PCGS MS64

The 1907 High Reliefs with Roman Numerals in the date, is acknowledged as the most beautiful design ever employed on a circulation-strike U.S. coin. They were the result of a lengthy collaboration between famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who was encouraged to develop the design by President Theodore Roosevelt, and Chief Engraver Charles Barber of the Philadelphia Mint.  Each coin required three blows from the 150-ton medal press to completely bring up the design, and the planchets had to be annealed between each blow. The average time needed to strike each individual coin was 12 minutes, clearly too slow to strike any large number of coins. As a result, only 12,367 pieces were reportedly produced.

1857 Liberty Half Eagle PCGS MS64

Only One Graded Higher

For many collectors, the idea of 1857-dated Mint State gold coinage begins and ends with the 1857-S double eagles from the S.S. Central America. To a lesser extent, however, the 1857 half eagle also fits the bill, though with a mintage in the high five figures, there is an understandable cap on the number of potential Mint State pieces. The PCGS population is a mere 4 with 1 (MS64+ example) graded higher. The one offered here displays rich color and a bold strike.

1915-S Pan Pac $50 Round NGC MS64

The Panama-Pacific Exposition was authorized to sell up to 1,500 examples each of both the Round and Octagonal versions of the Pan-Pac fifties, and the Mint struck 1510 examples of the Round version, including 10 examples for the Assay Commission. Unfortunately, the high cost of the coins ($100 per coin) discouraged all but the most dedicated collectors, and only 483 specimens of the Round design were sold. The remaining 1,017 coins were melted after the close of the exposition. These rare gold commemoratives are avidly sought-after in today’s market. If you’ve never held one of these massive and extremely impressive coins in your hand, you owe it to yourself to do so.
