Among the Coolest Overdates

The Philadelphia Mint struck more than 32 million nickels in 1918, with Denver and San Francisco contributing another 8.3 and 4.8 million coins, respectively. While all three issues are generally plentiful, there exists among them a variety that is both intriguing and conditionally rare: the 1918/7-D. The overdate was created in the Philadelphia Mint engraving department when a working die was hubbed with two different dates. Due to the massive work load on the engraving department, it’s likely the overdate occurred as a mistake, and not a deliberate usage of an outdated obverse. Examples of the 1918/7-D are known in very early and late die states, indicating that this was a fresh die at the beginning of production and was used throughout a normal coinage period. The NGC population is only 15 with 4 higher.

1912 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC PR65

As the various proof finishes offered by the Mint in the early 20th century became increasingly unpopular with the public, production totals dropped accordingly. Only 74 proof Saint-Gaudens double eagles were struck in 1912, using an innovative sandblast process in place of the earlier matte and Roman finishes. The sandblast finish created an even mustard coloration over both sides of the coin, with tiny sparkling facets that can be observed with magnification. This sparkle gives the surfaces a vibrant “life” to balance the deep monochromatic coloration. Unfortunately, the sandblast finish proved just as unpopular as the matte and Roman proofs of earlier years. It is likely that some of the coins went unsold and were melted after the end of the year.

1913 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS65+

Just 1 Graded Higher

A relatively modest business-strike mintage of 168,838 Saint-Gaudens double eagles was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1913. The coins were produced in nine deliveries, spaced throughout the year. Most of the circulation-strike coins were sent to European and Latin American destinations, and Roger W. Burdette estimates about 5,000 examples have been repatriated from overseas sources in recent times. Most examples seen are in lower Mint State grades, with the expected number of bag-marks from rough storage and transport. This is a rare issue at the MS65 grade level, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable. In fact, the one we offer here is the only NGC MS65+, with just one (MS66) example graded higher.

1865 SS Republic Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS65

Ex: S.S. Republic. From a smallish mintage of 351,175 pieces, the 1865 Liberty double eagle was a rare issue in high grade before the recovery of the S.S. Republic in 2003. Fortunately for present-day collectors, that famous shipwreck find yielded 320 examples of this issue, which graded AU50 to MS65. Consequently, Mint State examples can be found in today’s market with a little patience. Still, even today, the NGC population is only 22 (including 1 “Star” designated example) with 2 higher.

1839-C Classic Quarter Eagle NGC AU55

Sharp AU Charlotte $2.50

 While the 1839-C is one of the more frequently encountered Charlotte quarter eagles, it is disproportionately popular because it is a part of the Classic series. Only 18,140 pieces were produced, and of that number it is estimated perhaps 300 to 400 examples are known today in all grades.
