1839-D Classic Quarter Eagle NGC AU58

Rare, Nearly Unc.

The Dahlonega Mint opened for business in 1838, for the purpose of providing a coinage facility for miners of Southern gold and to service the local economy. As a result, coins produced at the Georgia branch mint circulated extensively. The first gold pieces struck at the Dahlonega Mint in 1838 were half eagles. Quarter eagles followed in 1839. In both cases, the first-year issue is a one-year type showing William Kneass’s Classic Head Liberty design. The NGC population is just 18 with 14 higher.

“C”-ing Double “39’s”

The 3 and 9 in the date are noticeably recut north on this variety, one of the scarcer varieties for the issue. Doug Winter estimates as many as 300 to 400 examples survive from a mintage of 18,140 coins, although the population thins considerably in the upper AU range, and true Mint State coins are rare.

Choice Key 1911-D Indian Quarter Eagle NGC MS63

The 1911-D is the first of only three branch mint issues in the Indian quarter eagle series and it claims a mintage of just 55,680 pieces, a remarkably small production total for any 20th century coin. Accordingly, this issue is the rarest Indian quarter eagle and the acknowledged key to the series. Most examples seen are in lower Mint State grades. The one offered here is lighter in hue and more lustrous than seen in our images. Listed at $12,900 in the CDN CPG, $14,300 in the NGC price guide and $15,000 in Trends.

Tied for Highest Graded 1904 Liberty Quarter Eagle NGC MS68

This little jewel is obviously one of the finest survivors for this issue. It features satiny, golden surfaces that exhibit no noticeable abrasions or other imperfections. Additionally, it’s fully struck and boasts a great overall appearance. It is particularly well suited for a collector who is looking for a fabulous Liberty quarter eagle to include in a top-notch gold type set, or someone who simply buys great coins.
