Tough 1927-S Saint Gaudens Double Eagle NGC MS61

The 1927-S double eagle has a long history of being among the scarcest and most prized dates in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. No significant quantities were ever released to the Treasurer, and the vast majority of the more than 3 million-coin mintage was later melted. In Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles,  Roger Burdette writes:

“After World War II, scarce-date coins began to surface in the bullion and numismatic holdings of European banks and individual. Several issues once thought to be very rare were located; some such as 1922-S and 1926-S in large quantities. A few 1927-S double eagles appeared, but not enough to have a significant impact on the coin’s relative scarcity.”
Today, about 300 pieces are believed extant in all grades, most residing in the MS61 to MS63 grade range.

Listed at $38,400 in the CDN CPG and $39,500 in the NGC price guide.

1799/8 Draped Bust Dollar NGC MS65

A Pre-1800 Gem Dollar

The 1799/8 Draped Bust dollars are popular because of their dramatic over dates. This is the “13 Stars Reverse” variety, as opposed to the other for this date – the “15 Stars Reverse”. The one offered here exhibits lighter color and more luster than seen in our unflattering images. Additionally, the surfaces are refreshingly clean, even considering the lofty grade. This is the only MS65 graded by NGC with a single (MS66) example graded higher.

1859-O Liberty Double Eagle NGC XF45

A Rare O-mint $20 Lib

The 1859-O is a rare New Orleans double eagle with a small 9,100-coin mintage. Perhaps only approximately 100 pieces are known in all grades, primarily distributed throughout the various XF and AU levels. Only two Mint State pieces are documented, both heavily bag-marked. The 1859-O shares its rarity with most other O-Mint twenties leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War. After the San Francisco Mint became operational in 1854, gold deposits in New Orleans declined significantly, and large denomination gold coinage plummeted. Between 1854 and the 1909, when the New Orleans Mint ceased coin production for the final time, fewer than 115,000 double eagles were struck at that facility.

1873 (Closed 3) Liberty Eagle NGC AU53

Very Rare

The 1873 Closed 3 (old name) or Close 3 (current nomenclature) coins were struck early in the year and the date logotype for all denominations was modified following complaints that the digit looked like an 8. Among Liberty eagles, the entire 800-coin mintage for the year was produced in January 1873, and none were minted with the modified Open 3 date style. Proof coins were preferred over Mint State coins in the 19th century, so no circulation strikes were saved at the time of issue, despite the low mintage. As a result, high grade survivors are non-existent. The NGC population is only 2 with 9 higher, none better than AU58.

1847 Liberty Eagle NGC MS64

Very Rare, Dazzling, Near-Gem

The two highest mintage issues of the No Motto Liberty ten series are the 1847 and 1847-O. Something happened that year to increase production, and the mostly likely cause was the Spanish-American War, which continued throughout 1847. Despite a comparatively large production, the 1847 is usually seen in XF and AU grades, uncirculated examples are tough to come by and choice uncirculated ones are almost unheard of. This is the only MS64 graded by NGC with none higher (though they have also recognized a single MS64PL, as well). This exquisite representative boasts flashy, semi-prooflike fields and some pleasing cameo contrast on each side.

1884 Gold Dollar NGC MS68+

An 8 and a Plus

This flashy, highly lustrous and exquisitely preserved example looks as if it were struck very recently, as opposed to more than 130 years ago! According to the NGC population report, it’s one of only nineteen to have received this lofty grade for the entire run of Type Three Gold Dollars (with only five graded higher).

1926-S Buffalo Nickel NGC MS65

Apart from the various varieties such as the 1916 Doubled Die, the 1918/7-D, et cetera, the greatest condition rarity among regular issues in the Buffalo nickel series is the 1926-S. This date is famous for its low (for the series) mintage of 970,000 pieces, the only production total that does not breach the seven-figure barrier. Survivors bring a premium even in low circulated grades. Mint State examples are actively traded due to the “conditional key” status of the issue, although these are primarily in the MS63 to MS64 range. At the Gem grade level, the availability of this issue plummets, and finer pieces are prohibitively rare. As is so often the case, this coin is much more lustrous than seen in our images. The NGC population report shows just 10 at this grade level with 6 higher.

1913-S Indian Eagle NGC MS64+ CAC

San Fran $10 Indian Rarity

The 1913-S Indian eagle claims a low production total of 66,000 pieces and few high-quality specimens were saved by contemporary collectors. Most of the coins were released into circulation at the time of issue, where they circulated heavily in both domestic and foreign trade. As a result, most examples seen today are in circulated grades, in the VF-AU grade range. In his Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century, Mike Fuljenz notes: “The 1913-S Eagle is regarded as one of the great condition rarities in all of the 20th century U.S. gold series. It is moderately scarce even in circulated grades and the small numbers of Uncirculated pieces that exist consist mainly of MS60 to MS62 pieces. Only three examples have been graded higher by NGC. In MS63, this date is rare and it is very rare in MS64.”

1929 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle PCGS MS65

Saint Rarity

The year 1929 marks a distinct line of demarcation in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series between common and rare. The 1928 Philadelphia twenty is a well-known and popular type issue that is well-produced and generally available in high grades. On the other hand, each later-date Saint-Gaudens double eagle, beginning with the 1929 and continuing through the series’ end in 1933, is a major rarity. Excluding the uncollectible 1933s, the five issues that usher in the series’ end comprise the 1929, the 1930-S, the 1931 and 1931-D, and the 1932. Of those five issues, the 1929, while still quite rare in an absolute sense, is the most available overall. Most examples of the 1929, however, are confined to the lower Mint State grades, and in Gem and finer condition, the issue takes a sudden leap upward, becoming rarer than the 1931 and 1932 issues. Only six have been graded higher by PCGS.

1916-S Indian Eagle NGC MS66+

Highest Graded, Rare and Satiny

The 1916-S is a better date in Uncirculated condition, regardless of grade. Only 138,500 pieces were produced. This was the only ten-dollar issue struck in 1916 at any mint, and no eagle coinage followed until 1920. Thus it’s essential for a complete date set of Indian gold. This is the only example graded higher than MS65 by NGC!
